"Jangan terlalu risau," kata Setiausaha Agung MOM, Datuk Sieh Kok Chi.

Tunas baru lahirkan atlit bertaraf Olimpik

ISN terap sains sukan

Kelibat Taufik resahkan Lee

Upbeat Chong Wei ready for battle
Chong Wei's biggest threat in his path to the final is Athens Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat.
Chong Wei's biggest threat in his path to the final is Athens Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat.

HE admits that he used to fear playing top players but that was in the past and this augurs well for Lee Chong Wei in his bid to make the All England men's singles final in Birmingham next week.

It will be a first for Chong Wei if he does but more importantly, it will prove how confident the World No 2 has become.

Failing to meet targets was common for Chong Wei before but that is no longer the case, thanks to coach Misbun Sidek's laid back style.

While Misbun sets Chong Wei targets, he doesn't put undue pressure on the player and this has resulted in the player thriving.

"I don't fear playing against the top players anymore. In fact, I enjoy the challenge simply because it brings out the best in me and I am comfortable with the fact that I need to beat them to win," said Chong Wei in Bukit Jalil yesterday.
"Misbun's influence has actually helped me to improve my confidence. Being a former top international, he understands me well and instead of being a taskmaster, he is supportive.

"He also introduced me to Fred Tan whose mental training sessions (since December) have also made me more relaxed.

"I now look forward to playing top players and am able to put up quality performances when competing against them.

"My target remains reaching the All England final. I believe I am in a good frame of mind to achieve my best result in the tournament."

The Thomas Cup qualifying round in Ho Chi Minh City last week was a useful warm-up for Chong Wei, where he was unbeaten.

"Those were easy matches but the All England is going to be different. All the top players will be there with the intention of winning but I will get the chance to put my ability to the test again."

Chong Wei's biggest threat in his path to the final is Taufik Hidayat whom the former will meet in the quarter-finals. Should Chong Wei overcome Taufik, a place in the final beckons against China's Lin Dan, in what Malaysians hope will be a preview of the Beijing Olympics final

Taekwondo: Aim high for world-class results

CITING taekwondo as an example, National Sports Institute (NSI) director general Datuk Dr Ramlan Abdul Aziz believes Malaysian sports can only achieve world class results if they aim for the sky from the start.

The current scenario in Malaysia is to work from the Sea Games upwards but Dr Ramlan said this approach should change.

"Why must we target the Sea Games if a particular sport is in the Olympics?" asked Dr Ramlan after launching the 3rd Nestle Koko Krunch Junior Taekwondo Championships at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil yesterday.

"If a particular sport already has a sound structure at the grassroots, like taekwondo, for example, we should be identifying future talent now.

"Events like the Nestle Koko Krunch Taekwondo Championships should serve as the avenue for us to identify talent and we should start working with them immediately."
NSI is the government agency tasked with talent identification and Dr Ramlan said championships for novices, who are the focus group for the Nestle Koko Krunch Taekwondo Championships, are also very important.

"We can't expect young athletes, irrespective of sport, to just train.

"There must be competitions for them to target and, more importantly, enjoy the sensation of winning."

Dr Ramlan also extended NSI's support to associations keen on introducing sports science to their athletes from an early age.

"With NSI in the midst of setting up 10 satellite centres, associations are welcome to approach us for help. That is our job and the younger an athlete is when exposed to sports science, the better it will be."

The Nestle Koko Krunch Junior Taekwondo Championships, which are organised by the Malaysia Taekwondo Clubs Association (MTCA), will be held in two venues - at the Kuala Lumpur Badminton Stadium on March 29 (600 exponents) and the Bestari Mini Stadium in Malacca (400 exponents) on May 10.

Seven coaching clinics - four in the Klang Valley and three in Malacca - will also be conducted.

Badminton: Race is still on, says Rexy

KUALA LUMPUR: The race for the men’s doubles third slot in the Thomas Cup Finals is still wide open.

National doubles coach Rexy Mainaky wants to use the back-to-back tournaments in Europe – the All-England and Swiss Open – to pick the country’s third pair.

Ease the pain: A Phiten officer applying one of their products on national number one Lee Chong Wei’s back during a seminar at Dewan Komanwel in Bukit Jalil Friday.
The All-England begins in Birmingham next Wednesday.

Rexy said it was time that the doubles players proved they were good enough to be selected for the premier team event, which will be held in Jakarta from May 11-19.

Malaysia are looking at naming four men’s singles players and three men’s pairs for the Finals.

“For now, no one is assured of his place (for the Finals) although the current top two pairs look good for their places. And the third slot, especially, is still an open race,” said Rexy.

“I have to be fair to the other players. They will be considered if then can achieve good results in Europe. This is their chance to show me that they deserve to be in the team.”

Currently, the top two pairs are world No. 3 Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and world No. 4 Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah.

Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Mohd Faizuzizuan Mohd Tazari could have strengthened their grip on the third doubles slot at the recent Thomas Cup qualifiers but they blew their chances after losing to the scratch partnership of Park Sung-hwan-Hwang Ji-man during the tie against South Korea in the final.

The others in the running for the third slot are Gan Teik Chai-Woon Lin Fui and Ong Soon Hock-Tan Bin Shen.

Soon Hock-Bin Shen quit the national team last month but returned a week later after the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) promised them better tournament opportunities in the future.

All five pairs will be competing in the All-England, with defending champions Kien Keat-Boon Heong having the best chance to go the furthest.

Zakry-Fairuzizuan will play Denmark’s Mathias Boe-Carsten Morgensen in the opening round; Teik Chai-Woon Fui are expected to face China’s Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng in the second round; Bin Shen-Soon Hock are likely to take on two-time All-England runners-up Tan Fook-Wan Wah in the second round.

Two other pairs with an outside chance of stealing the third doubles slot are Chan Chong Ming-Chew Choon Eng and Hoon Thien How-Tan Wee Kiong.

These two pairs did not make it to the All-England because of their low world rankings, a result of their new partnerships.

“It will be great if one of our pairs can win the All-England title. But what is more important to me is for them to perform just as how they have been doing in training,” said Rexy.

Rexy, Kien Keat-Boon Heong, national singles coach Misbun Sidek and top men’s singles shuttler Lee Chong Wei left for Birmingham yesterday

Athletics: Rayzam wants to use Asian GP to qualify for Beijing

By AFTAR SINGH KUALA LUMPUR: Hurdler Rayzam Shah Wan Sofian, who set a new record in the Korat SEA Games, looks set to be selected for the Asian Athletics Grand Prix.

The 19-year-old made a golden debut in the SEA Games in December when he clocked a personal best of 13.91 to erase the old mark of 13.92 set by Thailand’s Susphan Wongsrisphuck in Hanoi in 2003.

Rayzam: The national hurdler is expected to compete in the Asian Grand Prix in June.
Malaysian Amateur Athletic Union (MAAU) general manager Aminuddin Mohd Nasir said: “Rayzam is the best 110m hurdler in the South-East Asia region.

“He is on the right track to becoming a top hurdler in Asia and I believe that he should be picked for the Asian GP.”

There will be three Asian GP circuits in June – Bangkok (23rd), Korat (26th) and Hanoi 30th). The Asian Amateur Athletics (AAA) will decide by next month the number of athletes for the GP.

Rayzam said that he was looking forward to making his debut in the Asian GP.

“My aim this year is to earn a place in the Beijing Olympics and the three GP races will be a good platform to help me achieve my childhood dream,” said Rayzam, who has to beat the Category B qualifying mark of 13.72.

Rayzam, who finished fourth in the 60m hurdles in the Asian Indoor championships in Doha two weeks ago, will also compete in the World Indoor meet in Valencia from March 7-9. Beijing Games-bound pole vaulter Roslinda Samsu will also feature in the Valencia.

Besides Rayzam, the MAAU are also planning to send six other athletes and the men’s 4x100m and 4x400m teams to the Asian GP.

The male athletes are 110m hurdlers Mohd Robani Hassan and Mohd Faiz Mohamed, high jumper Lee Hup Wei and 1,500m runner M. Vadivellan. The women are 400m hurdler Noraseela Khalid and triple jumper Ngew Sin Mei.

Hup Wei also looks set to compete in the GP as he is the Asian Track and Field (ATF) championships gold medallist.

Boon Heong can’t wait to exact revenge on Japanese

KUALA LUMPUR: National men’s doubles specialist Tan Boon Heong can’t stand losing to the same opponents twice.

Last year, he and partner Koo Kien Keat lost to Taiwan’s Tsai Chia-hsin-Hu Chung-hsien in the second round of the China Open and Japan's Shuichi Sakamoto-Ikeda Shintaro in the third round of the World Championships.

This year, Boon Heong has avenged the defeat to the Taiwanese pair. He and Kien Keat beat Chia-hsin-Chung-hsien in the Thomas Cup qualifiers in Ho Chi Minh City last week.

Now, he can’t wait to face the Japanese duo in the All-England, which begins on Wednesday in Birmingham.

Boon Heong-Kien Keat will get a chance for revenge when they take on the Japanese pair in the first round.

The 21-year-old Boon Heong said that he has learnt from his past experiences.

“Yes, people will always remember our defeat to the Japanese pair at the world meet. But to me, the past is long gone and best forgotten. I am not rattled with the opportunity of meeting them again,” said Boon Heong after attending a seminar hosted by the National Sports Institute (NSI) and Phiten yesterday.

“I will face the Japanese the same way I faced the Taiwanese at the qualifiers. We did not put undue pressure on ourselves by thinking about our earlier defeat to them.

“I agree that the losses to the Japanese and Taiwanese pairs were the low points in my badminton career. But the defeats have also made me want to work even harder.”

Boon Heong said that he was focused on defending the title with Kien Keat in the All-England.

“Kien Keat and I cannot run away from being the centre of attention at the All-England. It is something that we have to accept and deal with. Our opponents are now more aware of the way we play. But we are also prepared and, for now, we want to clear the first hurdle,” said Boon Heong.

The others in the same half with Boon Heong-Kien Keat in the All-England are top seeds Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng of China, the Indonesia-US combination of Candra Wijaya-Tony Gunawan, and the top two Danish pairs – Jens Eriksen-Martin Lundgaard Hansen and Lars Paaske-Jonas Rasmussen

Good news as EGM is off

PETALING JAYA: The Badminton World Federation (BWF) took a big step towards reconciliation among their top brass when an Emergency General Meeting (EGM) scheduled for today was called off.

A date for the EGM was set following a vote of no-confidence against their president, Dr Kang Young-joong, during the world body’s council meeting in Kuala Lumpur last December.

Yesterday, however, the council members changed their minds.

BWF deputy president Datuk Punch Gunalan said the council, who met yesterday, unanimously agreed not to hold the EGM.

“We are not having an EGM because all matters have been resolved (among the aggrieved parties),” said Gunalan before having dinner with Dr Kang yesterday.

Earlier, speculation was rife that there was a rift among the top office-bearers in the BWF.

Zulmazran: Amateurs just as good as the professionals

PETALING JAYA: Zulmazran Zulkifli used to think that there was a huge gulf in the standard between professional and amateur bowlers.

But now, after keeping Malaysia’s flag flying high in the Denny’s World Championships in Indianapolis last week, the national bowler knows better.

The 25-year-old Zulmazran returned home on Wednesday with his head held high.

He made it to the Super 16 Finals by virtue of finishing eighth after the third round of the tournament, which comes under the Professional Bowling Association’s (PBA) Tour.

It was the first time that the PBA had opened their door to amateurs.

Despite his good performances, Zulmazran was disappointed that he lost in the first round of the elimination stage, going down 2-4 to American pro bowler Tom Daugherty.

“An amateur bowler has to be on top of his game to be able to keep pace with the professionals. I could have gone further in the tournament,” said Zulmazran.

“The standard between the amateur and professional bowlers is about equal. But the significant difference is the equipment used by these two groups of bowlers.

“I went to the United States with only four balls whereas a professional bowler drills a new ball after every squad. I thought that was amazing. They certainly have the advantage as far as the equipment are concerned.”

For the record, two-time PBA Bowler of the Year Norm Duke emerged as the champion at Denny’s.

Having brushed shoulders with the pros and returning richer with experience, Zulmazran is confident that amateurs will still be able to make their presence felt in the World Championships, which will be held in Thailand in August.

For the first time, professionals will be allowed to compete in the World Championships.

“In the world meet, a bowler will be restricted to having only six balls. This probably will put the professionals on equal footing with us, the amateurs, at the world meet,” said Zulmazran.

“I would still rate Sweden, Finland and South Korea as the major medal contenders at the World Championships. But the United States, powered by professionals, will be a big threat as well.”

Zulmazran’s next assignment is the Malaysian Open, which will be held at the Pyramid Mega Lanes from March 18-29.

Roslin masih mengharap

Muhd. Roslin Hashim.

KUALA LUMPUR – Jaguh veteran negara, Muhd.

Kok Chi diarah tutup mulut -- Kemelut Pesuruhjaya Sukan-Persatuan

“Tapi saya bukan orang makan gaji.

ISN wujud 10 pusat satelit

Ketua Pengarahnya, Datuk Dr. Ramlan Abd.

Ex-coach's jail sentence cut to a year

PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal yesterday sentenced former athletics coach C. Ramanathan to 12 months' jail for molesting two junior athletes 19 years ago. A three-man bench led by Datuk Mohd Hishamudin Mohd Yunus unanimously dismissed Ramanathan's appeal against conviction, but varied the jail sentence of four years to a year, which was to run concurrently. Following yesterday's ruling, Ramanathan, 75, a former teacher, walked out a free man as he had served 10 months in Kajang Prison. Convicts get one-third remission for good behaviour while in prison. However, he will lose his pension. Hishamudin, who sat with Datuk Abdul Wahab Patail and Datuk Linton Albert, said the court found no merit to overturn the conviction. "However, in reducing the sentence, we considered Ramanathan's age and the long years the appeal has taken." Rajagobal who does not mince his words when asked to com...
