GOLF: Ousted Tunku Majid says EGM illegal

THE Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) and president Tunku Majid Sultan Iskandar (right) are headed for a showdown. MGA passed a motion of no confidence against him yesterday but a defiant Tunku Majid said yesterday's extraordinary general meeting (EGM) was unconstitutional and that he would complete his term which ends in May. Tunku Majid's contention is that only the MGA executive committee can call for an EGM. The EGM was called as some members were allegedly unhappy with Tunku Majid's running of MGA and the selection of golfers for assignments. "Under the constitution, the EGM can only be called by the general committee. I have consulted former president Datuk Thomas Lee and my lawyers on the provision over this matter and they made it clear that the meeting is invalid," said Tunku Majid in a press conference in Kuala Lumpur. The press conference was held before MGA convened the EGM. "Thomas also said the delegates in the meeting c...

Delegates remove Tunku Majid as president

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) president Tunku Abdul Majid Idris declared yesterday that he would not seek re-election at the annual general meeting (AGM) scheduled for May. But in a later development, Tunku Majid was removed from his post in an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) held at the Bukit Jalil Golf and Country Club. The delegates present voted 129-33 to remove Tunku Majid, who was not present at the meeting. A motion had been put to vote earlier to have Datuk Robin Loh, one of the two vice-presidents, to chair the EGM and 132 voted in favour of it and 49 against it. The issue of the no confidence vote against Tunku Majid, who took over as president from Datuk Thomas Lee last year, arose out of 13 allegations, among them abuses of power and interference in the selection of players. Robin added that they had tried to resolve the issues through closed door meetings but to no avail and hence decided to call for an EGM. A notice on it was sent to a...

Vote Of No-confidence Against Tunku Majid

JOHOR BAHARU, Dec 9 (Bernama) -- Tunku Majid Sultan Iskandar is not seeking re-election as president of the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) when his term of office expires in May. But even as he makes his announcement in Kuala Lumpur today, his fellow MGA members passed a vote of no-confidence against his leadership during an extraordinary general meeting (EGM), a couple of hours later. The disgruntled members have expressed dissatifaction over the manner in which he had guided the association and the certain decisions he had made in his tenure since taking office in May, last year. But Tunku Majid, who is also president of the Johor Hockey Association, dismissed the motion of no-confidence as a sign of a hidden agenda against him. "What crimes have I committed against the MGA. If I had, then they have every right to kick me out. "In any case, the EGM called, is unconstitutional," added Tunku Majid. He explained that he was calling the press conference today to con...
