Selangor FA to be privatised
Selangor FA president Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim.
SELANGOR FA president Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim, who is also the Mentri Besar, yesterday announced that the association will be a corporation and managed by a professional chief executive officer (CEO).
“We are going to privatise the running of the local league and management. I am going to appoint a CEO to manage the association and the team.”said Khalid.
“We will advertise soon and suitable candidates can apply for the position.” This decision means some FAS officials will be moved out as Khalid clearly believes football is in a professional era now and therefore fulltime officials must be appointed.
“This is a professional era and football must be managed professionally, and I want accountability.
Big money is spent on football so results must be seen along with how the money is spent.” Khalid confirmed that Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor’s (Syabas) sponsorship of RM5 million will continue and that the state government will continue supporting the team.
MILLION$!: That ’s what a Malaysian stands to collect .... if a gold medal is won
NSC director general Datuk Zolkples Embong.
OLYMPIC gold in Beijing could earn a national athlete between RM1 million and RM1.5 million.
On paper, only the national shuttlers have a chance but with Malaysia without a medal at the Olympics since Atlanta '96, NSC is leaving no stone unturned in its bid to ensure this doesn't happen again.
"We have finalised the proposal (of a new incentive scheme) and will submit it to the NSC board for approval. All I can say is that at this point of time it is very lucrative," said NSC director general Datuk Zolkples Embong yesterday.
Former Sports Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, in one of her final acts before the General Election, said NSC was looking at increasing the incentive and invited the corporate sector to help.
"I am not saying what the figure is but it is a big amount but it is definitely more than the current amount (RM160,000).
"This is to motivate the players to work harder. Mind you, Singapore are offering more."
Singapore offers S$1 million (RM2.3 million) for an Olympic gold while South Korea US$200,000 (RM662,000)
Siti clinches gold in return from one-year ban
KUALA LUMPUR: Pistol shooter Siti Nur Masitah made a return to competition after a one-year suspension with a bang yesterday.
The Pahang lass, who was suspended together with two other pistol shooters Bibiana Ng and Joseline Cheah after testing positive for propranolol during the President Ally T. H. Ong Championships last March, bagged the gold in the 25m event of the same competition at the National Shooting Range in Subang.
She scored a total of 769.2. Police shooter Bibiana took the silver on 764.5 while Terengganu’s Alia Sazana won the bronze with a score of 758.5. Penangite Joseline finished seventh on 746.8.
Siti together with Nik Nur Nadirah Ismail and Norerffani Abdul Malick accumulated 1,687 points to claim the team gold for Pahang.
Siti, whose one-year ban expired on March 21, said that winning the gold was a pleasant surprise.
“I was rusty after the one-year ban. I was dropped from the national elite squad because of the ban and my aim now is to regain a place,” she said.
The National Shooting Association of Malaysia (NSAM) secretary, Jasni Shaari, said that for Siti and also Bibiana and Joseline to get back into the elite programme, they needed gold medal-winning performances in any of the South-East Asia level competitions.
“They will get their chance in the SEASA Championships in Hanoi in September,” said Jasni.

Top seeds Koo-Tan make it to the semi-finals
ALOR STAR: Top seeds and defending champions Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong marched into the semi-finals of the Proton National Grand Prix Finals after scoring a convincing 21-13, 21-18 victory over Chew Choon Eng-Hong Chien Hun at the Kedah BA Hall here last night.
Needing a victory to avoid elimination, Kien Keat and Boon Heong were in command throughout the match and the win gave them second spot in Group A.
They failed to top the group after losing in three closely contested games to national team-mates Gan Teik Chai-Lin Woon Fui on Wednesday night.
Kien Keat-Boon Heong will take on Group B winners Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah in the semi-finals.
The other semi-final match is between Teik Chai-Woon Fui and Group B runners-up Tan Bin Shen-Ong Soon Hock.
“The heat inside the hall was unbearable tonight. But luckily we managed to keep our focus together. We knew that nothing less than a win was needed and managed to rise to the occasion,” said Boon Heong.
“It does not matter that we have to play against the in-form Tan Fook-Wan Wah in the semis itself. Our goal is to win every match regardless of the opponents.”
In the men's singles, second seed Tan Chun Seang qualified for his first-ever semi-finals in the national Finals after triumphing 21-16, 18-21, 25-23 over Mohd Arif Latif in the titanic battle to determine the Group B winner.
The Kedahan saved two match points and also wasted three opportunities to seal the match before getting it right in the fourth attempt.
“Due to the immense pressure, both Arif and myself were making errors throughout the match,” said Chun Seang. “The Kedah fans fired me up and I have to thank them for helping me to pull through,” added Chun Seang, who will play Yeoh Kay Bin today for a place in the final.
The other semi-final is between Lee Chong Wei and Mohd Roslin Hashim.
Rising star Tee Jing Yi produced a giant-killing act in the women's singles by knocking out second seed and former national champion Anita Raj Kaur.
Anita, who had already lost to Stephanie Shalini on Wednesday, found the going too tough against the Bukit Jalil Sports School student and was beaten 14-21, 23-21, 15-21.
The 17-year-old Jing Yi, who won all her three Group B matches, will play against Vivian Hoo in the semi-finals.
The other semi-final is between Stephanie and top seed Julia Wong
