SIN LI JANE
SINGAPORE'S Remy Ong-Jazreel Tan turned on the heat in the sixth game to deny Malaysia's Muhd Nur Aiman-Sin Li Jane the mixed doubles gold medal at the 4th Commonwealth Tenpin Bowling Championships at the Dundonald International Ice Bowl in Belfast, Northern Ireland on Wednesday.
Muhd Nur-Li Jane, who bowled in Squad A, fired a 2,766 on long oil conditions to set a benchmark for Squad B. Muhd Nur sizzled with lines of 232, 259, 205, 216, 290, 227 for a 1,429 total.
Li Jane, 16, was equally impressive, posting 173, 222, 244, 243, 234, 221 for a 1,337 total.
In Squad B, Remy set a blistering pace with back-to-back 257s to put Singapore on the right course. His partner Jazreel responded with 200 and 238 in the opening two games.
The pair then amassed 428 for a 2,327 total after five games and needed only 439 to leapfrog Muhd Nur-Li Jane for the gold. Remy-Jazreel felled 451 pins to win the title with a new six-game championships record of 2,778 pinfalls, an average of 231.50.
They pipped Muhd Nur-Li Jane by 12 pins.
Syafiq-Nur Syakirah fired a 454 in their last game to leapfrog England's Darren Cundy-Zara Glover for the bronze. The Malaysians posted 2,656.
Muhd Nur leads the men's all-events (after 18 games) with 4,324 followed by Remy (4,227) and Canada's Joe Coach (4,078). Syafiq is fourth on 4,077.
Muhd Nur will need to keep his performance on track in the mixed team, played alternately over long and short oil conditions, to win the event.
"It's a pity that after playing so well we lost the gold in the mixed doubles. It was beyond our control as we bowled in the earlier block," said Muhd Nur in a telephone interview from Belfast yesterday.
"However, I'm not giving up so easily as I intend to win the all-events title. I just need to focus on my final six games in the mixed team."
England's Zara Glover leads the women's section with 4,064 followed by Jazreel (4,011) and Li Jane (3,846). Syakirah is currently 11th on 3,545.
The top 12 bowlers in the all-events will advance to today's Masters finals.
Singapore lead the medal tally with two gold and two silver, followed by Malaysia (2-1-2) and England (1-1-0).
