KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) president Tunku Abdul Majid Idris declared yesterday that he would not seek re-election at the annual general meeting (AGM) scheduled for May.
But in a later development, Tunku Majid was removed from his post in an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) held at the Bukit Jalil Golf and Country Club.
The delegates present voted 129-33 to remove Tunku Majid, who was not present at the meeting.
A motion had been put to vote earlier to have Datuk Robin Loh, one of the two vice-presidents, to chair the EGM and 132 voted in favour of it and 49 against it.
The issue of the no confidence vote against Tunku Majid, who took over as president from Datuk Thomas Lee last year, arose out of 13 allegations, among them abuses of power and interference in the selection of players.
Robin added that they had tried to resolve the issues through closed door meetings but to no avail and hence decided to call for an EGM.
A notice on it was sent to all the members on Nov 14.
“We decided this was the forum for Tunku Majid to explain the allegations in front of the members. This EGM is lawfully and legally constituted. It does not provide for every eventuality but we are going by the interpretation,” he said.
On why they did not want to wait until the AGM in five months’ time, Robin said that the exco needed to act before things got out of hand.
“We are acting on behalf of the members. No interest is greater than the interest of the MGA,” he added.
Tunku Majid said that he decided not to attend the EGM after consulting his lawyer.
“I also sought advice from Datuk Thomas Lee as he held the post for a long time previously. His advice was since I am elected to the post, there is no provision for them to remove me until the AGM,” he said.
“After consulting my lawyer, I deemed the EGM ultra vires and invalid. I decided not to resign and I will complete my term and step aside to let them elect the new president.”
