Ho Koh Chye Will Always Be Remembered As A Hockey Hero

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 4 (Bernama) -- Datuk Ho Koh Chye who died Wednesday will always be remembered as one of Malaysia's greatest hockey heroes.

Koh Chye was Malaysia' goalkeeper in the 1975 team that has yet to be surpassed in the country's hockey history.

That year, Malaysia were tantalisingly close to reach the final in the World Cup only to be denied by India. However, Malaysia finish fourth in the tournament, the best ever finish to date in the World Cup.

For Koh Chye, hockey was everything to him. He once said:" But whatever hockey's fate, one thing will remain unchanged. The memories of 1975 will forever be cherished, never to be forgotten."

"Koh Chye was also a very brave player. Sometimes he would even use his forehead to stop the ball from going into goal," said Bernama acting general manager Visvakumar Sangiah, who used to be student of Koh Chye.

Koh Chye was was born in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan on Nov 5, 1942.

An ex-student of St Paul Institution, Seremban, he was called up for national hockey goalkeeping duty four times -- Jakarta Asian Games (1962), Tokyo Olympics (1964), Bangkok Asian Games (1966) and Mexico Olympics (1968).

In 1970, apart from being a player, he was also entrusted with the responsibility of preparing the national team for the Asian Games in Bangkok.

However, his sweetest moment in his chequered hockey career was the fourth place finish in the 1975 World Cup held in Kuala Lumpur.

After retiring from the sport, he was actively involved in sports development in the country.

His last post before retiring from the National Sports Council in 1992 was director of its Division for International Preparation.

He was appointed deputy chef-de-mission of the Malaysian contingent to the Hiroshima Asian Games in 1994 and chef-de-mission to the Vietnam SEA Games in 2003.

For the immense contributions he made for sports especially hockey, he was awarded the Darjah Indera Mahkota Pahang which carries the "Datuk' title by Sultan Ahmad Shah of Pahang in 2003.

And this year, he was given the honour to be Malaysia's chef-de-mission to the Beijing Olympics in August.

Just before his death, Koh Chye was appointed to the Malaysian Hockey Federation's Vision Committee, which is chaired by Datuk Wira Mazlan Ahmad.
