SNOOKER: Fu triumphs as betting probe goes on

TELFORD (England): Hong Kong snooker star Marco Fu moved into the UK Championship semi-finals on Wednesday but the announcement that the world governing body of snooker were investigating claims of suspicious betting cast a pall over the tournament.

Fu edged out Englishman Joe Perry to avenge going out to him in the second round of the same tournament last year.

The duo fought out a seesaw battle with Fu pulling away to an 8-4 lead but Perry then won the next three only for the Hong Kong player to hold his nerve and take the one frame he needed for victory.

Wednesday's other quarter-final saw Englishman Ali Carter win a thriller with Wales' former world champion Mark Williams 9-8.

Earlier, the WPBSA (World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association) had announced they were launching an investigation into the betting on the first round match between Stephen Maguire and Jamie Burnett.
Maguire prevailed 9-3 over his Scottish compatriot in a scoreline which had been heavily bet on and had forced bookmakers to suspend betting on the match.

Burnett missed a black in the 12th frame which would have made it 8-4 but he denies any wrongdoing.

Bets for Maguire, last year's losing finalist, to win 9-3 came in after he opened up a 6-2 overnight lead last Saturday.

In a statement, the sport's governing body said that they had been forewarned before the match that there had been strange betting patterns on the match and that had given them time to watch the match themselves and observe if there was anything they believed was untoward about it.

"The WPBSA is committed to taking all steps within its power to protect the integrity of the sport," it said in a statement. -- AFP
