MARCUS Chee was Kuala Lumpur's hero when he helped his team upset top seeds Selangor 2-1 in the boys' Under-16 quarter-final of the ECM Libra Foundation-LTAM Junior Team Championships at the National Tennis Centre in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Selangor drew first blood when Christian Lee steamrolled younger brother Jason, representing KL, 6-2, 6-1 in the opening singles.

However, Marcus played near perfect tennis to edge Nazim Khan 6-3, 6-2 to put KL on equal terms.

In the doubles, Marcus-Hanifah Rahizam fought tooth-and-nail to beat Christian-Amrul Amin Mokhtar 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 much to the delight of the KL bench.

KL coach Azizul Azhar Ahmad said the tactical switch to play Marcus in the second singles instead of the opening match made the difference.
"Marcus has a better record against Nazim, and Marcus-Hanifah played brilliantly in the doubles to upset their higher ranked opponents," said Azizul.

Kuala Lumpur will meet Perak, who beat Perlis 2-0, in today's semi-finals.

"Perak's strength lie in Kevin Loke and Tan Ee Zhou and they will be the favourites tomorrow (today).

"Marcus and Hanifah are playing well and if they can maintain their form, I believe Kuala Lumpur will make the final," Azizul added.

Negri Sembilan, led by Syed Aqil Syed Naguib, beat Kelantan 2-0 to earn their place in the semi-finals, and meet second seeds Sarawak, who beat Kedah 2-0.

In the girls' Under-16 quarter-finals, Selangor were hardly tested in their 2-0 win over Kedah.

Adelle Boey swept past Farah Hamima 6-0, 6-1 while Toi Sieu Minn thrashed Noor Putri Fatihah Noorman 6-1, 6-0.

Selangor have a tricky encounter against Perlis, led by the Hassan sisters Nurshafikah and Nurshahirah, in their last four match today.

RESULTS -- Boys' Under 16 (q-finals): Kuala Lumpur 2 Selangor 1, Perak 2 Perlis 0, Negri Sembilan 2 Kelantan 0, Sarawak 2 Kedah 0.

9th-15th placing: Pahang 2 Terengganu 0, Penang 2 Johor 1, Sabah 2 Tanglin (S'pore) 1.

Under-13 (q-finals): Sarawak 2 Tanglin (S'pore) 1, Negri Sembilan 2 Perlis 1, Selangor 2 Kuala Lumpur 0, Penang 2 Sabah 0.

9th-15th placing: Kedah 2 Johor 0, Perak 2 Terengganu 1, Malacca 2 Kelantan 0.

Girls' Under-16 (q-finals): Selangor 2 Kedah 0, Perlis 2 Sabah 0, Kuala Lumpur 2 Penang 1, Sarawak 2 Pahang 0.

9th-14th placing: Kelantan 2 Terengganu 0, Perak 2 Johor 0.

Under-13 (q-finals): Sarawak 2 Penang 0, Selangor 2 Johor 0, Negri Sembilan 2 Pahang 0, Perlis 2 Kuala Lumpur 0.

9th-12th placing: Kedah 2 Terengganu 0, Sabah 2 Kelantan 0.
