PETALING JAYA, Jan 12 (Bernama) -- Defending champion Selangor look set to retain the overall title again after a strong performance on the first day of the 22nd Interstate Bowling Championship at the Pyramid Mega Lanes in Bandar Sunway.
Selangor led the medal tally with two golds from the men's and women's singles events.
The golds came from national bowler Siti Safiyah Amirah Abdul Rahman and Alex Liew in the women and men's singles titles, respectively.
"It was a superb performance by the players. God willing, we will try to retain the title again this year. This time, our strong challenge comes from the Penang, Johor and Kuala Lumpur teams. Our players are ready for the championship," Selangor team manager Lukman Jasril told Bernama on Monday.
In the women's category, national elite player Siti Safiyah Amirah took the lead from the begining and retained her momentum until the end of six-games to outclass the other national player in the field.
Siti Safiyah, 18, knocked down 1,297 pins over the six-game with lines of 246, 191, 224, 194, 205 and 237 to claim the gold medal.
Following closely was Tengku Emanina Laily Tengku Zahri of Kedah, who settled for the silver medal with 1,247 pins. The bronze medal was shared by Cheryl Cheong (Kuala Lumpur) and Kim Eun Jung (Penang) who knocked identical scores of 1,239 pins.
Lim Hsu Zen outclassed some national youth players to clinch the first gold medal for Negeri Sembilan in the Girl's category after knocking down a line of 198, 244, 215, 170, 174 and 173 for a total of 1,174 pinfalls.
"I'm really happy with my perfomance today. I did not expact to win. I just played my best in every game," said the 16-year-old who wants to become a professional bowler, just like her idol, Shalin Zulkifli.
Following with six pins behind her was Tunku Haifaa Tunku Osman of Pahang with 1,168 pin to settle for the silver medal. The bronze was won by Nur Alyany Lahat Dadok of Johor with 1,163 pins.
In the Boy's category, Jonathan Chan of Pahang won the gold medal with 1,319 pinfalls. Khoo Beng Khai of Penang and Yusuf Abd Raof of Kuala Lumpur had 1,263 and 1,258 pins, respectively, for the silver and bronze medal.
Meanwhile, in the men's event, Alex thrilled the spectators at the arena with eight straight strikes in the final game to snatch the gold medal.
In Monday's competition, he was trailing pace-setter Adrian Ang of Penang by 26 pins, after the fifth game.
A superb 263 pinfalls in the final game saw Alex snatch the gold medal with 1,409 pinfalls. Adrian settled for the silver with 1,363 pins and Kang Bo Long took the bronze with 1,353 pin.
The bowlers will continue their games in the doubles events on Tuesday, which offer another four gold medals.
