KUALA LUMPUR, March 30 (Bernama) -- National athletes lead the challenge for the Malaysian Universities Sports Council (Masum) 2009 sportsman and sportswoman awards in Kuantan on April 4.
Hurdler champion Roslinda Samsu of UPM and netball player Yap Sou Kuen of UM have been nominated for the sportswoman award while Robani Hassan of UPM (hurdle) and Mohd Syahir Asraf Rosli of UiTM (rugby) for the sportsman award.
Each university is allowed to nominate only one athlete in each category, Masum Promotion and Sponsorship Committee chairman Nur Ekmal Bukhary told reporters after a briefing on the awards today.
He said three new categories were introduced this year -- most promising sportsman, most promising sportswoman and a special award.
Other athletes nominated for the sportswoman award were Radiah Hassan of IIUM (silat), Fazilla Slyvester Silin of UiTM (hockey) and Wong Sim Yih of UTM (volleyball).
Other nominees lined-up for the sportsman award are Mohammad Zaim Zulfadli of IIUM (bowling), Salehin Abdul Jalil of UM (lawn bowling), Tengku Mohd Farid Rosli Tengku Roslan of UTM (rugby).
Other existing categories are best men's team, best women's team, best manager, eminent sports leader and the Sekalung Budi award.

KUALA LUMPUR, April 29 (Bernama) -- Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek remains confident that the national Uber Cup squad can spring a surprise when Malaysia hosts the Thomas and Uber Cup finals at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil from May 9-16. He said despite not being the favourite, the women's team was able to surprise everyone by winning the gold medal at the Laos SEA Games. "I am confident they (Uber Cup team) will be able to produce a similar surprise. Not only are they capable of reaching the semi-final, they can go further," he told reporters after having lunch with national shuttlers here Thursday. National badminton Team manager Datuk Syed Abu Bakar Abdullah who echoed the minister's confidence said: "In Laos, nobody expected the women's team to win the world, so why not the Uber Cup?
