TABLE TENNIS: Lee Wei-Sock Khim aim to impress at world meet

FOLLOWING their triumph in the recent India Open, doubles pair Beh Lee Wei and Ng Sock Khim eye another good showing in the World Individual Table Tennis Championships in Yokohama on April 28-May 5.

Lee Wei-Sock Khim aim to go one better than their last-16 achievement at the 2007 edition in Zagreb.

Lee Wei, an 11-time national singles champion and Sock Khim, a silver medallist at the 2007 Korat Sea Games, also fancy their chances in the women's singles event. Lee Wei, the World No 159th, finished second in the singles at the India Open.

Table Tennis Association of Malaysia (TTAM) honorary secretary Chan Foong Keong said a good performance from the duo and their compatriots at the world meet is important towards building their confidence for the Laos Sea Games.

"Lee Wei-Sock Khim have improved tremendously over the years and the association hopes they improve their standing at the world meet," said Foong Keong on Sunday.
"The association is aware that the world meet is a very strong competition and it will be tough for them to make an impression."

Lee Wei-Sock Khim are expected to be seeded in the doubles.

The third woman paddler in the team is Chiu Soo Jinn while the men's squad comprise two-time national champion Shakirin Ibrahim, Kho Mao Sheng, and Chai Kian Beng.

The six paddlers are currently in Zhengting, China for a training-cum-sparring stint. -- AJITPAL SINGH

Ex-coach's jail sentence cut to a year

PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal yesterday sentenced former athletics coach C. Ramanathan to 12 months' jail for molesting two junior athletes 19 years ago. A three-man bench led by Datuk Mohd Hishamudin Mohd Yunus unanimously dismissed Ramanathan's appeal against conviction, but varied the jail sentence of four years to a year, which was to run concurrently. Following yesterday's ruling, Ramanathan, 75, a former teacher, walked out a free man as he had served 10 months in Kajang Prison. Convicts get one-third remission for good behaviour while in prison. However, he will lose his pension. Hishamudin, who sat with Datuk Abdul Wahab Patail and Datuk Linton Albert, said the court found no merit to overturn the conviction. "However, in reducing the sentence, we considered Ramanathan's age and the long years the appeal has taken." Deputy public prosecutor Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud submitted that then High Court judge Tan Sri Abdull Hamid E...
