THE National Sports Institute (NSI) is moving towards becoming an autonomous body and it could happen within this year.
Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek said once done, he expects NSI to be a leader in sports research, sports medicine and sports science in Malaysia.
"It's a good move as the institute has huge potential to be a leader in sports development.
"The institute's Act will be amended soon to allow it to operate as a separate entity," said Ahmad Shabery, who visited the NSI in Bukit Jalil yesterday.
NSI, under the purview of the National Sports Council (NSC), provides expert sports science services and also conducts research and development.
Ahmad Shabery was taken on a tour by NSI director general Datuk Dr Ramlan Abdul Aziz.
Ahmad Shabery was happy with the state-of-the-art facility but stressed that the institute should also focus on educating athletes about diet and nutrition.
"Most athletes, I noticed, still consume unhealthy food like nasi lemak and teh tarik. They should be educated."
"However, I should probably not blame them as even the canteens here provide unhealthy food.
"This I believe, is the reason why our athletes lose out in size and fitness," he added.
