Nicol ke suku akhir


RATU skuasy negara, Datuk Nicol David berada pada laluan terbaik untuk menjulang trofi Terbuka Malaysia buat kali kelima berturut-turut tahun ini.

Semalam, pemain ranking pertama dunia itu meneruskan cabarannya ke suku akhir Kejohanan Skuasy CIMB Terbuka Malaysia selepas mudah menjinakkan pemain Belanda, Vanessa Atkinson.

Pada pusingan pertama itu, Nicol menang 11-4,11-5,11-8 dalam permainan yang hanya mengambil masa 38 minit.

Menanti juara Sukan Dunia itu di suku akhir hari ini ialah pemain Australia, Kasey Brown yang terlebih dahulu membuat kejutan apabila menundukkan pilihan keenam dari Mesir, Omneya Abdel Kawy 12-10,11-5,11-7.

Sementara itu, impian pemain No. 2 negara, Delia Arnorls untuk mengiringi Nicol ke pusingan suku akhir tidak kesampaian.

Delia yang beraksi dengan menggunakan tiket wild card, nyata bukan tandingan pemain pilihan ketiga, Natalie Grinham dari Belanda apabila tewas 5-11, 4-11, 8-11.

Dalam saingan lelaki, pemain harapan negara yang juga juara bertahan, Ong Beng Hee tidak berdepan masalah untuk menundukkan rakan senegara, Muhd, Asyraf Azan pada pusingan pertama.

Beng Hee yang diletakkan sebagai pilihan keenam, menang 11-5,11-9,11-5 dalam permainan yang mengambil masa 39 minit dan akan bertemu pemain pilihan ketiga dari Mesir, Wael El Hindi yang terlebih dahulu menundukkan pemain India, Saurav Ghosal 11-8,11-7,11-6.

Begitupun, nasib tidak menyebelahi seorang lagi pemain negara, Mohd. Azlan Iskandar apabila tewas kepada pemain bukan pilihan, Omar Mosaad dari Mesir.

Azlan yang turun selaku pilihan kelima, tewas 12-10, 5-11, 1-11, 9-11.

KUALA TERENGGANU, May 29 (Bernama) -- Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badaw i said the government always gives emphasis on cultivating a strong sporting culture in achieving excellence at the international level.
