Good results move Siti up

By Ajitpal Singhajitpalsingh@nst.com.my

SITI Safiyah Amirah Abdul Rahman, after a series of excellent results, is the new Asian No 2 women bowler.

Siti Safiyah earned 294 points after winning the World Ranking Masters in May. She also finished with a bronze in the recent AMF World Cup in Malacca.

The 19-year-old is just 5.5 points behind leader Chan Shuk Han of Hong Kong while her compatriot Vanessa Fung is third with 276 points.

Siti Safiyah could leapfrog Shuk Han provided she does well in the Penang International Open next month.

Former national bowler Tang Joh Six is fifth with 258 points. The 27-year-old won three titles this year including the ABF Tour's Tournament of Champions and the Thailand Open.

Zatil Iman Abdul Ghani and Shalin Zulkifli are 14th and 15th respectively, on the ABF rankings.

Meanwhile, Zulmazran Zulkifli is the only Malaysian bowler ranked on the men's rankings.

Zulmazran, who won this year's Malaysia Open and Jakarta Super Classic, is seventh with 218 points.

Previously, the top eight in Asia would compete in the World Ranking Masters but next year's edition will likely be scrapped due to lack of sponsors.

Ex-coach's jail sentence cut to a year

PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal yesterday sentenced former athletics coach C. Ramanathan to 12 months' jail for molesting two junior athletes 19 years ago. A three-man bench led by Datuk Mohd Hishamudin Mohd Yunus unanimously dismissed Ramanathan's appeal against conviction, but varied the jail sentence of four years to a year, which was to run concurrently. Following yesterday's ruling, Ramanathan, 75, a former teacher, walked out a free man as he had served 10 months in Kajang Prison. Convicts get one-third remission for good behaviour while in prison. However, he will lose his pension. Hishamudin, who sat with Datuk Abdul Wahab Patail and Datuk Linton Albert, said the court found no merit to overturn the conviction. "However, in reducing the sentence, we considered Ramanathan's age and the long years the appeal has taken." Deputy public prosecutor Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud submitted that then High Court judge Tan Sri Abdull Hamid E...
