FAM targets Asean Championship, Asian Games

THE FA of Malaysia (FAM) has set next year’s Asean Championship and Asian Games as the prime targets for the national football team. FAM general secretary Lt Jen (Rtd) Datuk Azzuddin Ahmad said the national team will
be prepared and exposed extensively ahead of both competitions.

“The target for the Asean Championship is the title. The Asian Games is a different level of competition and we will be happy if they can do well in it,” said Azzuddin at the National Sports Convention in Kuala Lumpur yesterd ay.

The core of the team for both competitions will come from the National Under-23 team who won the Sea Games gold medal in Laos recently.

On a different note, Azzuddin said the national Under-23 players should not be complacent as others are awaiting their chance to don national colours.

“We have so many players in the M-League and the current players in the national team should not take their places for granted.” Meanwhile, the Young Tigers team who won last season’s Premier League will likely be based abroad next year.

The Young Tigers were supposed to play in next season’s Super League but FAM made an about turn recently by recommending the team for international exposure.

The team are handled by former Kedah coach Azraai Khor.

“We (FAM) are in the midst of planning out a programme for the team. It is a comprehensive effort to ensure our future players are of some class.”

Following yesterday's ruling, Ramanathan, 75, a former teacher, walked out a free man as he had served 10 months in Kajang Prison. Convicts get one-third remission for good behaviour while in prison. However, he will lose his pension. Hishamudin, who sat with Datuk Abdul Wahab Patail and Datuk Linton Albert, said the court found no merit to overturn the conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud submitted that then High Court judge Tan Sri Abdull Hamid E...
