Kim Her not taking over from Rexy yet

TAN Kim Her’s involvement with the national elite back-up and elite men’s doubles squads will not begin any time soon as the National Sports Council (NSC) does not want his arrival to disrupt Malaysia’s preparations for the Thomas Cup Finals in Kuala Lumpur on May 9-16.

NSC director general Datuk Zolkples Embong said if Kim Her starts his job before the Thomas Cup, he could still be utilised in other areas and this has been agreed to by the BA of Malaysia’s (BAM) secretary P. Ganga Rao, who represented the association at the joint committee meeting yesterday.

“Kim Her’s role can be utilised in other areas as I don’t want the Thomas Cup preparations to be disrupted. If BAM wish for him to start early, they will have to seek sponsors to pay his salary for the time being and we will make arrangements after the Thomas Cup,” said Zolkples.

“There are specific coaches handling various squads and once the Thomas Cup is over, BAM can carry out the necessary reviews and fit Kim Her in.”

Ganga said Kim Her can be utilised to coach the players who have just graduated from Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS), including Chooi Kah Ming who won the world junior title with Ow Yao Han, before playing a more prominent role with the back-up elite squads.

This will also ease the pressure on national doubles chief coach Rexy Mainaky who has been under pressure due to speculation that he will be removed and replaced by Kim Her when the latter starts with BAM next month.

Ex-coach's jail sentence cut to a year

PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal yesterday sentenced former athletics coach C. Ramanathan to 12 months' jail for molesting two junior athletes 19 years ago. A three-man bench led by Datuk Mohd Hishamudin Mohd Yunus unanimously dismissed Ramanathan's appeal against conviction, but varied the jail sentence of four years to a year, which was to run concurrently. Following yesterday's ruling, Ramanathan, 75, a former teacher, walked out a free man as he had served 10 months in Kajang Prison. Convicts get one-third remission for good behaviour while in prison. However, he will lose his pension. Hishamudin, who sat with Datuk Abdul Wahab Patail and Datuk Linton Albert, said the court found no merit to overturn the conviction. "However, in reducing the sentence, we considered Ramanathan's age and the long years the appeal has taken." Deputy public prosecutor Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud submitted that then High Court judge Tan Sri Abdull Hamid E...
