KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 23 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's sole gold-medallist in taekwondo at the Laos SEA Games, Che Chew Chan is the country's first choice for the Guangzhou Asian Games in November.
National coach R. Dhanaraj said besides Chew Chan, silver-medallist Elaine Teo might booked a berth based on her national ranking.
"So far Chew Chan had booked her ticket to the Asian Games. Besides Chew Chan, five more taekwondo exponents have been shortlisted based on their performance since last year," Dhanaraj told Bernama.
He said Malaysia might be represented by six taekwondo exponents should they perform well in four international tournaments in the run-up to the Asian Games.
Meanwhile, Chew Chan, who won gold in the women's middleweight category in Laos, said she had yet to receive confirmation that she had qualified for the Asian Games from the National Sports Council and the Olympic Council of Malaysia.
Elaine Teo, who had to content with a silver in the women's fly weight under 49kg in Laos, said she would have to fight for points at international tournaments to book a berth to Guangzhou.
"I am training hard to sharpen my skills before the crunch," she added.
