Delay will not disrupt preparation

THE BA of Malaysia's (BAM) plans to move into its national excellence centre in Taman Maluri, Cheras before the 2012 London Olympics will not happen as the completion date has been pushed back.
However, Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the delay in completing the RM25 million project, which was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in 2008, will not disrupt the national shuttlers' preparations for the 2012 London Olympics.

The players are currently based at Rakan Muda Complex in Bukit Kiara and train at the adjacent Juara Stadium. They travel to National Sports Institute (NSI) in Bukit Jalil for physical training.

Ahmad Shabery promised that the existing facilities at Rakan Muda Complex will be improved so that the players will be able to train there without facing problems.

"The new centre will be delayed and I'm afraid the players will not be able to move in there before the London Olympics. However, we will do everything possible to ensure the facilities at Rakan Muda Complex and Juara Stadium are complete so that their preparation towards the Olympics is not disrupted," said Ahmad Shabery.

"Funding is an issue for the new centre at the moment but it will be completed as planned.
"Among the current facilities that need improvement is the gymnasium which has to be specifically equipped as it fulfills the requirements for badminton related training so that the players don't have to travel to Bukit Jalil for physical training.

"We will improve the quality of the centre further so that the players can continue training there without problems."

BAM has also created a new sub-committee for building and facilities which will supervise the progress of the national excellence centre. It will be chaired by Datuk Sayed Abu Bakar Abdullah. NST

Ex-coach's jail sentence cut to a year

PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal yesterday sentenced former athletics coach C. Ramanathan to 12 months' jail for molesting two junior athletes 19 years ago. A three-man bench led by Datuk Mohd Hishamudin Mohd Yunus unanimously dismissed Ramanathan's appeal against conviction, but varied the jail sentence of four years to a year, which was to run concurrently. Following yesterday's ruling, Ramanathan, 75, a former teacher, walked out a free man as he had served 10 months in Kajang Prison. Convicts get one-third remission for good behaviour while in prison. However, he will lose his pension. Hishamudin, who sat with Datuk Abdul Wahab Patail and Datuk Linton Albert, said the court found no merit to overturn the conviction. "However, in reducing the sentence, we considered Ramanathan's age and the long years the appeal has taken." Deputy public prosecutor Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud submitted that then High Court judge Tan Sri Abdull Hamid E...
