PUTRAJAYA: Former national athletes, especially those from Sabah and Sarawak, have been urged to register with the National Athletes Charity Foundation (Yakeb).
Youth and Sports Deputy Minister Datuk Razali Ibrahim said this would enable Yakeb to keep in touch with them and provide assistance when needed.
“They should come forward and register themselves. Don’t wait until the last minute when you need help or are sick,” he said after a lunch for sponsors and media, which was hosted by the foundation’s patron Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.
He said it was difficult for the foundation to track down all the former athletes.
There are now 642 former athletes registered with Yakeb.
During the luncheon, Iris Corporation Berhad donated RM190,485 to the foundation.
The donation was based on the performances of world No. 1 singles player Lee Chong Wei and men’s doubles pair Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong in international tournaments.
The company has pledged to contribute 50% of the first prize money and 25% of the second prize money won by the shuttlers in international tournaments to Yakeb.
Rosmah, who is the Prime Minister’s wife, said the foundation would ensure that aid was disbursed only to those eligible.
“It is my hope that the co-operation between the foundation, corporate sector and media can be further strengthened,” she said.
