More Top Names Joining The Fray At Maybank Malaysian Open

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 23 (Bernama) -- The Asian Tour's highest ranking golfer and two-time champion Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand and world number 42 Soren Kjeldsen of Denmark will be among the top attractions at the Maybank Malaysian Open from March 4 to 7.

Thongchai collected two more trophies in his Asian Tour collection by winning the Enjoy Jakarta Indonesian Open and the Ballantine's Championship in South Korea last year.

Kjeldsen won his third European Tour event at the 2009 Open de Andalucia.

The European Tour (ET), Asian Tour (AT) and Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) Tuesday announced the participation of the duo, who are among the 16 additional players confirmed for the Open at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (KLGCC).

The organisers said in a statement that the new inclusions comprised 10 international and six local golfers.

These players will be joining previously announced stars such as K.J. Choi, Darren Clarke, Shingo Katayama, Arjun Atwal and the 2009 winner, Anthony Kang.

Others coming were Thailand's veteran, Boonchu Ruangkit, Miles Tunnicliff, Andrew Coultart and Simon Yates (England), Scott Strange, Alastair Forsyth and Danny Willet (Australia) and Gangajeet Bhullar (India).

"The second wave of players committing to the Maybank Malaysian Open shows the appeal of the event from all Tours," said Maybank chairman Tan Sri Megat Zaharuddin Megat Mohd Nor in the statement.

Maybank Berhad, as the championship title sponsor, has invited local professional golfers Rashid Ismail and Shaaban Hussin as their selected invites.

"Both players have worked hard at their game over the years and will put in good performances to please the home crowd. It is important that the tournament reflects a good mixture of both local and international talent," said Megat Zaharuddin.

Joining Rashid and Shaaban were invites by the MGA -- Mohamad Hisyam Abdul Majid, Gavin Kyle Green, Mohamad Iszaimi Ismail and Able Tam.

They will be joined by Airil Rizman Zahari, S. Sivachandran and Nicklaus Fung (MGA invites) and five other local pro golfers -- Anis Helmi Hassan, P. Gunasegaran, M. Sasidaran, Akhmal Tarmizie and Shukree Othman -- who secured the coveted spots for local players in a qualifying tournament held on Jan 19 and 20.

Ex-coach's jail sentence cut to a year

PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal yesterday sentenced former athletics coach C. Ramanathan to 12 months' jail for molesting two junior athletes 19 years ago. A three-man bench led by Datuk Mohd Hishamudin Mohd Yunus unanimously dismissed Ramanathan's appeal against conviction, but varied the jail sentence of four years to a year, which was to run concurrently. Following yesterday's ruling, Ramanathan, 75, a former teacher, walked out a free man as he had served 10 months in Kajang Prison. Convicts get one-third remission for good behaviour while in prison. However, he will lose his pension. Hishamudin, who sat with Datuk Abdul Wahab Patail and Datuk Linton Albert, said the court found no merit to overturn the conviction. "However, in reducing the sentence, we considered Ramanathan's age and the long years the appeal has taken." Deputy public prosecutor Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud submitted that then High Court judge Tan Sri Abdull Hamid E...

Rajagobal Let Off The Hook

PETALING JAYA, April 24 (Bernama) -- National head coach Datuk K. Rajagobal was let off the hook by the Football Association of Malaysia's (FAM) Disciplinary Committee after finding no evidence that he had violated FAM's Article 88, as claimed. FAM Disciplinary Committee chairman Datuk Taufik Abdul Razak said the committee had decided not to charge Rajagobal after carefully analysing the video of the post-match press conference by the 56-year-old coach. "After listening to the recording of the post-match press conference, we decided to drop the charge against Rajagopal as he did not make such a statement. "Maybe his (Rajagobal) assessment and comments of the match was misconstrued by the media. There was no mention of the FAM policy throughout his comments," said Taufik after emerging from a three-hour Disciplinary Committee meeting at Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya, here, Wednesday. Rajagobal who does not mince his words when asked to com...
