Anuar To Lead Local Charge During ACC Road Race In Dubai

KUALA LUMPUR, March 23 (Bernama) -- Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) Sprint King, Anuar Manan will lead the National team's charge at the Asia Cycling Championships (ACC) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) on April 10.

Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) president Abu Samah Wahab said apart from Anuar, Ahmad Haidar Anuawar, Adiq Husainie Othman, Mohd Zamri Salleh, Mohd Nur Ridzuan Zainal, Ahmad Fallanie Ali and Ng Yong Li would make up the team.

"Six of the riders, including Anuar will be involved in the 180km mass start while Yong Li is down to compete in the 40km individual time trial," he told Bernama here on Tuesday.

Abu Samah said based on current performance, MNCF's hopes of a medal of any colour in the ACC, would firmly rest on Anuar's shoulder.

"We were reliably informed that the route for the road race involves a flat terrain and that opens up a bright prospect for Anuar as he is a natural sprinter," he said.

Abu Samah said MNCF hopes that five other riders in the road race would play a role in ensure that Anuar remains in the leading pack when reaching the finish line.

"We have high hopes on Anuar because we have not won any medals in the ACC which is into its 30th edition. However, we must also admit that it won't be an easy task, especially with the presence of riders from Kazakhstan, Japan and South Korea," he said.

Abu Samah said the selection of the seven riders was based on their performances in the 2010 LTdL and evaluated by national coach William Walker.

He added that as part of preparations for the ACC, the riders, except for Mohd Nur Ridzuan, would compete in the Tour of Thailand which starts next Thursday.

"The Tour, comprising six stages, will act as a warm up competition for the riders before going to Dubai," he said.

Ex-coach's jail sentence cut to a year

PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal yesterday sentenced former athletics coach C. Ramanathan to 12 months' jail for molesting two junior athletes 19 years ago. A three-man bench led by Datuk Mohd Hishamudin Mohd Yunus unanimously dismissed Ramanathan's appeal against conviction, but varied the jail sentence of four years to a year, which was to run concurrently. Following yesterday's ruling, Ramanathan, 75, a former teacher, walked out a free man as he had served 10 months in Kajang Prison. Convicts get one-third remission for good behaviour while in prison. However, he will lose his pension. Hishamudin, who sat with Datuk Abdul Wahab Patail and Datuk Linton Albert, said the court found no merit to overturn the conviction. "However, in reducing the sentence, we considered Ramanathan's age and the long years the appeal has taken." Deputy public prosecutor Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud submitted that then High Court judge Tan Sri Abdull Hamid E...

The Indonesia SEA Games Organizing Committee (Inasoc), was qouted by Jakarta Post as saying that a pair of Komodo dragons, a male (Modo) and a female (Modi), were chosen in recognition of the Republic's conservation efforts to protect the dwindling number of the rare lizard. The Komodo dragons, the largest lizard in the world, only live on the Indonesian islands of Komodo in Flores, East Nusa Tenggara. On Jan 15, Inasoc unveiled its logo, a Garuda eagle, to symbolize the power and grandeur of Indonesia.
