Cash and award await silver medallist Azizul

PETALING JAYA: Cyclist Azizul Hasni Awang is in line to receive RM10,000 under the national sports reward scheme for his silver medal effort in the just concluded World Champion­ships in Copenhagen.
Azizul took silver in the keirin and it was his second in the world championship series after a silver in the 200m sprint in Poland last year.

For a world championship held annually, the incentive scheme pro­­­vided for RM20,000 for a gold, RM10,000 for a silver and RM5,000 for a bronze.

The Terengganu government are expected to hand out the same amount of reward for Azizul but a bigger recognition awaits him at the end of next month.

The 22-year-old is the firm favou­ri­te to clinch the 2009 National Sportsman of the Year award based on his achievement as the first Ma­­laysian to claim the World Cup overall title, including winning the legs in Melbourne and Beijing.

In the Asian Championships in Indonesia, Azizul defended his 200m sprint title and played a pivotal role in helping Malaysia bag the team sprint gold for the first time.

Ex-coach's jail sentence cut to a year

PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal yesterday sentenced former athletics coach C. Ramanathan to 12 months' jail for molesting two junior athletes 19 years ago. A three-man bench led by Datuk Mohd Hishamudin Mohd Yunus unanimously dismissed Ramanathan's appeal against conviction, but varied the jail sentence of four years to a year, which was to run concurrently. Following yesterday's ruling, Ramanathan, 75, a former teacher, walked out a free man as he had served 10 months in Kajang Prison. Convicts get one-third remission for good behaviour while in prison.
