Sepak Takraw: PDRM Lifts Khir Johari Gold Cup In Sepak Takraw

KUALA LUMPUR, March 22 (Bernama) -- The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM)'s sepak takraw team emerged as the winner of the 47th edition of the Khir Johari Gold Cup at the final at Gymnasium 2 of the National Sports Council (NSC) building in Bukit Jalil Monday evening.

PDRM's team comprising national players Mohd Normanizam Ahmad, Mohd Futra Abd Ghani and Mohd Hafizie Manap got the first point.

The experience of Mohd Normanizam and Mohd Futra, who were gold medalists in the 2005 Sea Games, clearly showed when they defeated the opposing trio of Zamzee Mohd Zainuddin, Mohd Ariff Busu and Afandi Abd Rahman 21-14 and 21-11 to lead Selangor 1-0.

However, another national trio turning out for Selangor, namely Ahmad Sufi Hashim, Nor Shahrudin Md Ghani and Farhan Adam, revived hopes for their team when they overcame PDRM's second trio.

They defeated Mohd Hairul Kaz Oto, Mohd Hasbah Ab Rahman and Nuk Akmal Firdauz Ahmad 21-11 and 21-17.



In the third match, PDRM was clearly more prepared to take on Mohd Zhafran Zharif, Khairul Annuar Ibrahim and Ariff Ramli who were Selangor's third trio.

The skills of Hasrul Anuar Suboh, Mohd Shaifullah Mohd Nor and Badrul Azli Mohd enabled PDRM to lift the prestigious sepak takraw cup and collect RM5,000 with a win of 21-16 and 21-19.

President of the Sepak Takraw Association of Malaysia (PSM), Datuk Ahmad Ismail, was clearly pleased with the display and quality of play.

"The national players who participated played well and displayed improvement although they had just undergone centralised training about a month ago.

"Meeting the target of a gold medal at the Asian Games in China at the end of the year is not impossible if they hold on to their current talents," he told reporters after the competition.

Ahmad said such confidence was also voiced by the Director-General of the NSC, Datuk Zolkples Embong, who took time out to watch the matches.

"PSM is glad that this year which is the 50th anniversary of the association three more categories, namely women, veteran and youth, were well accepted," he said.

Rajagobal Let Off The Hook

PETALING JAYA, April 24 (Bernama) -- National head coach Datuk K. Rajagobal was let off the hook by the Football Association of Malaysia's (FAM) Disciplinary Committee after finding no evidence that he had violated FAM's Article 88, as claimed.
