Everyone Must Shoulder Responsibility To Win Olympic Gold - Naim

KUALA LUMPUR, April 28 (Bernama) -- The responsibility of winning the country's first ever gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics, must not be vested entirely on the shoulders of athletes said Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) deputy president Datuk Naim Mohamad.

He said, instead everyone, including the government, associations, private sector and the people of Malaysia must work as a united force to see the mission succeed.

Naim who was commenting on the aspirations of National track cyclist Mohd Azizulhasni Awang's ambition to try and win the country's first Olympic gold medal in London, after being crowned as the National Sportsman of the Year for 2009 last night, said it would not be an easy task.

"Preparing athletes for the mission is not an easy task. As for Azizulhasni and MNCF, there will a lot of effort to be put in.

"We have to look after his welfare and future to ensure Azizulhasni can fully focus on the task ahead without any interruption or obstacle," he told reporters.

Azizulhasi is among 21 elite athletes from cycling, badminton, archery and aquatics, listed under the 'Road To London 2012' programme which was initiated to win the country's first ever Olympic gold medal.

Meanwhile, speaking of Yayasan Sime Darby (YSD) Track Team's participation in the World Cup Classic, Naim said the team would compete in all the four series this year.

"Apart from Azizulhasni, six other riders in the team are Mohd Rizal Tisin, Mohd Edrus Yunos, Mohd Hafiz Suffian, Josiah Ng, Junaidi Mohd Nasir and Fatehah Mustapha," he said.

They will compete in the first series in Melbourne, Australia from Dec 2-4, followed by Cali, Columbia, Beijing, China and Manchester, England.

"With the participation of the YSD Team, Malaysia will have an opportunity to send another team for the series," he said.

Ex-coach's jail sentence cut to a year

PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal yesterday sentenced former athletics coach C. Ramanathan to 12 months' jail for molesting two junior athletes 19 years ago. A three-man bench led by Datuk Mohd Hishamudin Mohd Yunus unanimously dismissed Ramanathan's appeal against conviction, but varied the jail sentence of four years to a year, which was to run concurrently. Following yesterday's ruling, Ramanathan, 75, a former teacher, walked out a free man as he had served 10 months in Kajang Prison. Convicts get one-third remission for good behaviour while in prison. However, he will lose his pension. Hishamudin, who sat with Datuk Abdul Wahab Patail and Datuk Linton Albert, said the court found no merit to overturn the conviction. "However, in reducing the sentence, we considered Ramanathan's age and the long years the appeal has taken." Deputy public prosecutor Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud submitted that then High Court judge Tan Sri Abdull Hamid E...

The Komodo dragons, the largest lizard in the world, only live on the Indonesian islands of Komodo in Flores, East Nusa Tenggara. On Jan 15, Inasoc unveiled its logo, a Garuda eagle, to symbolize the power and grandeur of Indonesia.
