Athletics: Hup Wei leads challenge in India

HIGH jumper Lee Hup Wei and the national women's 4x100m quartet will carry the Malaysian challenge at the Asian Athletic Grand Prix series in India early next month. The three-leg Asian GP series will take place in Pune, Bangalore and Chennai on June 1, 5 and 9 respectively and will feature some of the Asia's best athletes.

Hup Wei won the first two legs in China last year before having to settle for second in the concluding event in Hong Kong.

The 23-year-old from Selangor has qualified for both the New Delhi Commonwealth Games and Guangzhou Asian Games and the series will be geared towards excelling at those end of year events for Hup Wei.
The women's relay will take part for the first time as part of their preparation for the Asian Games.

Five sprinters have been named for all three legs -- Nurjannah Hafiszah Jamaluddin, Nurul Sarah Kadir, Siti Zubaidah Adabi, Siti Fatima Mohamed and Yee Yi Ling.

In addition to the relay, Penang's Nurjannah will also race in the 100m in all three legs.

National coach Harun Rasheed said the relay team are beginning to show signs of improvement and will only get better with more races under their belt.

"We have a few promising sprinters who have been showing improvement. Siti Fatima has recovered from injury and is working towards getting back to her best while Nurjannah has improved tremendously.

"Siti Zubaidah has also room to improve further after recently taking up the 100m having previously only focused on the long jump," said Harun recently.

The women qualified for Guangzhou by clocking 45.69 seconds at the Vientiane Sea Games last December where they finished fifth.

The Asian GP series offers US$110,000 (RM365,145) in prize money with the men to compete in the 100m, 400m, 800m, 110m hurdles, high jump, long jump, triple jump and shot put alongside the women's 100m, 800m, 100m hurdles, triple jump, high jump, shot put and discus.

The relays are open events and are not officially part of the series

Rajagobal Let Off The Hook

PETALING JAYA, April 24 (Bernama) -- National head coach Datuk K. Rajagobal was let off the hook by the Football Association of Malaysia's (FAM) Disciplinary Committee after finding no evidence that he had violated FAM's Article 88, as claimed.
