THREE national junior athletes qualified for the Youth Olympics in August after winning their berths at the Asian qualification meet in Singapore at the weekend.
Hurdler Ajmal Mat Hassan and high jumper S. Navinraj won silver in their respective events to earn automatic qualification while Fahme Mohamed's third place in the boys' pole vault also qualified him for the Singapore Youth Olympics after meeting the qualification height.
Navinraj, seen as the heir apparent to Malaysia's top high jumper Lee Hup Wei, was the first to qualify on Saturday when he cleared 2.08m to finish second to Taiwan's Hsiang Chun-Hsien, who cleared 2.10m at the Bishan Stadium.
The following day, Ajmal flashed home in 13.78 seconds in the boys' 110m hurdles final, behind China's Wang Dongqiang who clocked 13.51.
Fahme was assured of a bronze medal in the pole vault with a 4.20m effort after two athletes in the five-strong field failed to post a height.
Wataru Tanaka of Japan cleared 5.02m to win gold ahead of Chen Hsiao-Wei of Taiwan who managed 4.60m.
The top two athletes in each event qualified automatically for the Aug 14-26 Games for 16 and 17-year-olds while additional places are available depending on performances.
