PUTRAJAYA, May 26 (Bernama) -- Malaysian referee Subkhiddin Mohd Salleh who was picked to officiate at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, made a courtesy call at Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin's office here Wednesday.
Subkhiddin, 44, a teacher at Sekolah Menengah Vokasional Nibong Tebal in Penang, met Muhyiddin who is also the Education Minister, at the Education Ministry here to offer his gratitude for the support from the government.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Subkhiddin said Muhyiddin had advised him to maintain his physical fitness and give his best during the competition to prove that teachers can also be good referees.
"I am very proud to represent the country as a representative of the education sector," he said.
Subkhiddin, from Butterworth, started his career as a football referee in 1990 and soon scaled the ranks of international football after officiating numerous tournaments organised by the Football Association of Malaysia and the Asian Football Confederation before gaining recognition as a FIFA referee in 2000.
