BADMINTON: KLBA asked to reconsider BGM

SPORTS Commissioner Datuk Nik Mahmud Nik Yusof has advised Kuala Lumpur BA (KLBA) to reconsider having its Biennial General Meeting (BGM) on Sunday after further complaints that the associationā€™s financial report was left out of the
agenda.

Nik Mahmud said an official letter was sent to KLBA yesterday and it is up to the association to decide on the matter.

ā€œWe received complaints that the financial report was not included in the agenda of the BGM. We also have the minutes of the KLBAā€™s council meeting to decide on the BGM where the financial report was not discussed,ā€ said Nik Mahmud yesterday.

ā€œWe have advised KLBA to reconsider having the meeting to avoid further complications.
ā€œAs for the eight clubs (who have been barred from the BGM), they can write in to become KLBA affiliates but it is the prerogative of the association to accept them.

ā€œEven if two of the clubs ā€”Te l e k o m and Felda ā€” registered with us before the notice of the BGM was sent to affiliates on May 27, KLBA has the right to decide whether to accept them or not.ā€ Fomer KLBA treasurer Seluarize Rajoo, who is one of the complainants, said they donā€™t have a choice but to file for an injunction.

ā€œAccording to KLBA constitution, a copy of the financial report must be attached with the BGM notice but the financial report is not even on the agenda of the meeting.
ā€œTelekom and Felda registered with the Sports Commissioner on May 18 but the notice of BGM was only sent out on May 27.

ā€œThis means the two clubs met the deadline set by the Sports Commissioner but now he says KLBA has the right accept or reject their affiliation.

ā€œThe Sports Commissioner must be firm and make an official decision whether the BGM should be conducted on Sunday, not just advise.ā€ Only 27 affiliates are supposed to take par t in the BGM.

Ex-coach's jail sentence cut to a year

PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal yesterday sentenced former athletics coach C. Ramanathan to 12 months' jail for molesting two junior athletes 19 years ago. A three-man bench led by Datuk Mohd Hishamudin Mohd Yunus unanimously dismissed Ramanathan's appeal against conviction, but varied the jail sentence of four years to a year, which was to run concurrently. Following yesterday's ruling, Ramanathan, 75, a former teacher, walked out a free man as he had served 10 months in Kajang Prison. Convicts get one-third remission for good behaviour while in prison. However, he will lose his pension. Hishamudin, who sat with Datuk Abdul Wahab Patail and Datuk Linton Albert, said the court found no merit to overturn the conviction. "However, in reducing the sentence, we considered Ramanathan's age and the long years the appeal has taken." Deputy public prosecutor Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud submitted that then High Court judge Tan Sri Abdull Hamid E...
