KUALA LUMPUR: Having clinched respectable results at the Belgium Open recently, the Malaysia National Silat Federation (Pesaka) is hoping to continue their fine run at the SEA championship in Vietnam on Aug 2-8.
At the European outing last month, the national exponents bagged 11 gold medals en route to being named as the overall champions.
The Dutch camp came in second And to put the icing on the cake, Faizal Abdullah and Emy Latiff were voted the best exponents of the championship.
“We hope to emulate our success in Brussels with the Vietnam Sea Silat championship as our immediate attention," said national head coach Nasri Nasir.
“We will compete in silat seni and silat olahraga (combat). The latter category comprises 15 exponents while we have yet to decide on the other one.
“We sent 11 exponents to Belgium and all won their respective events. It is a positive sign as we prepare for the world championship in Kalimantan (December)," he added.
Nasir is pleased with the elite and back-up exponents' performances during to the recently concluded Malaysia Games.
The national athletes were included in the Malaysia Games to add ‘colour’ as well as to provide them with competition and exposure.
He said new talents were identified but States must take initiatives to devise long-term development programmes to improve standards.
