Junior Netball Team To Receive Incentive For Emerging Tops In Asia

KUALA LUMPUR, June 29 (Bernama) -- The National junior netball team that helped Malaysia to become the top country in Asia, will receive incentives from the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Malaysia who have won the Asian Junior Netball title for three consecutive editions from 2004 (Sri Lanka), 2006 (India) and 2008 (Hong Kong), would be heading to New Delhi, India from July 3 to 10, seeking for the fourth consecutive title.

Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the incentive was to acknowledge the team's success but the form of incentives or the quantum would also be announced next week.

"Based on the current performance, Malaysia are ranked as the best junior team in Asia and ranked 16th in the world. Netball will also be regarded as sports that can contribute medals in prestigious games like the Commonwealth Games," he told reporters here today after handing the Jalur Gemilang to the New Delhi-bound squad's skipper Aziemah Abdul Aziz.

Apart from Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong and India will be taking part in the championship.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Netball Association president Suraya Yaacob said the incentives would help spur the players to retain the title for the fourth consecutive time.

Suraya said Malaysia would not be competing in the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi since only the top 12 teams are eligible to compete while Malaysia are ranked 16th in the world.

"Our aim is to finish among the top 12 teams in the world an qualify for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland," she said.

Malaysia To Send Two Junior Cyclists To World Junior Championship In Italy

KUALA LUMPUR, June 29 (Bernama) -- Two national junior cyclists have been picked to represent the country at the World Junior Track Cycling Championships in Montichiari, Italy in August. National back up squad manager Azrain Mohamed Yusof said Mohd Arfy Qhairant Amran and Mohd Fattah Amri Zaid were picked for the championships based on their performances throughout this year. "The championships is part of efforts to expose young riders at international competitions, so that they can be better prepared for the future," he told Bernama when contacted here Tuesday. Azrain said since they would be basically competing in the championship for exposure, there would be no specific target for Mohd Arfy and Mohd Fattah Amri, but if they return with medals, it would be a bonus. "It is however, not their first overseas competition and I believe they will not encounter any problems to adapt themselves to the conditions in Italy," he said. Mohd Arfy and Mohd Fattah w
