Malaysia looking at finishing as Asean schools champions

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will host the second Asean Schools Sports Carnival from July 12-2 with 11 sports in the programme.

A total of seven countries have confirmed their participation in the carnival – featuring athletics, aquatics (diving and swimming), golf, netball, badminton, basketball, volleyball, artistic gymnastic, gymrama, sepak takraw and hockey.

Malaysia are taking part in the carnival for the first time.

The other contingents in the fray are from Thailand, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore, Vietnam and the Philippines.

The Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) are the organisers of the event.

“We did not take part in the carnival in Thailand last year because of the H1N1 scare,” said the MSSM organising secretary, Mohd Zarrawi Ravi.

“Our teams were ready to go but cancelled the trip after being advised to stay home.
So this will be a new experience for us and we hope to be good hosts as well.
“You can call the carnival a mini SEA Games.”

Zarrawi added that netball and hockey were the new additions to the list of sports in the 10-day carnival for athletes in the Under-18 age-group.

“There are a total of 105 gold medals at stake in the 10-day event. Thailand were the overall champions last year and we hope that we will be able to emerge as the winners this time,” he said.
The carnival will involve more than 1,600 athletes and 1,000 officials and all the contingents will be housed at Kolej Zaaba in the UKM.

Zarrawi said that most competition venues would be in KL while a few, among them sepak takraw and volleyball, would be held in Shah Alam while golf will be held at the Impiana Golf Course in Kajang.
He added that Malaysian teams for the various sports were selected from the recent national schools (MSSM) championships.

“The teams are already in training. We are hoping to put up good shows and hopefully be competitive in all the events we are taking part in,” said Zarrawi.

Singapore, who will host the Youth Olympics in August, will be home of the carnival next year.

Malaysian junior athletes are just too ‘lembik’

Saya setuju. We are working on more coaches! “ @ManOlimpik : Malaysian junior athletes are just too ‘lembik’ http://t.co/7D7wmHWaNy ” — Khairy Jamaluddin (@Khairykj) June 10, 2014 The benchmark. Can our junior athletes train as hard as Malaysia's world No.1 badminton player, Lee Chong Wei? “IT IS okay lah. The training is not too bad lah. I will try lah … Wah, so hard lah today.” These are some of the common statements I hear from our juniors nowadays. It is not only in badminton. It is the easy-going, laid-back attitude and lack of competitiveness at grassroots level that we have problems producing quality players. I have travelled quite a bit. After ending my decade-long career with the national team, I went to play in the league in Europe. It’s different there. The European athletes know what they want. And they do it with real focus. Even the young ones possess admirable self-control and show a high level of commitment. During my time in the ...

Organising Major Sports Events Can Inspire Sports Culture Among The People - Khairy

PUTRAJAYA, June 5 (Bernama) -- Organising major sports events can help inspire sports culture among the people and ensure a healthy lifestyle said Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin. Khairy said the Tour of Malaysia cycling race organised since 1963, for example, can encourage more people to take the sport in a more competitive way or just for recreation purposes. "A study carried out by a world renown medical journal, The Lancet, revealed that 61 percent of adults in Malaysia do not engage themselves in active sports. "A study by the Health Ministry revealed that only 25 percent of Malaysians exercise," he said in his speech when launching the 2013 Tour of Malaysia (Jelajah Malaysia) at the Youth and Sports Ministry, here, Wednesday. "Cycling, though not as popular here as in countries like Denmark, the activity is becoming popular among the people as can be seen through an increase in sale of bicycles for recreation," he sa...

KBS realistik
