Malaysia To Send Two Junior Cyclists To World Junior Championship In Italy

KUALA LUMPUR, June 29 (Bernama) -- Two national junior cyclists have been picked to represent the country at the World Junior Track Cycling Championships in Montichiari, Italy in August.

National back up squad manager Azrain Mohamed Yusof said Mohd Arfy Qhairant Amran and Mohd Fattah Amri Zaid were picked for the championships based on their performances throughout this year.

"The championships is part of efforts to expose young riders at international competitions, so that they can be better prepared for the future," he told Bernama when contacted here Tuesday.

Azrain said since they would be basically competing in the championship for exposure, there would be no specific target for Mohd Arfy and Mohd Fattah Amri, but if they return with medals, it would be a bonus.

"It is however, not their first overseas competition and I believe they will not encounter any problems to adapt themselves to the conditions in Italy," he said.

Mohd Arfy and Mohd Fattah would be taking part in Sprint and Keirin events at the championships.

Meanwhile, one of the riders, Mohd Arfy, said taking part in championships of such magnitude would provide a world of experience for him since back up cyclists would require as much expose as possible in international meets.

"I will focus on my training for the next two months before heading to Italy," he said.

Malaysia had also sent two cyclists - Muhammad Zulhilmie Afif and Adiq Husaini Muhd Othman - to the World Junior Track Cycling Championships in Moscow, Russia, two years ago.

Adiq Husaini performed exceptionally well to win a bronze medal in the Scratch 10km (30 rounds) event of the championships.
