Malaysian Key Players To Face Hosts In Indonesia Open

JAKARTA, June 22 (Bernama) -- Two Malaysian men's singles players, Datuk Lee Chong Wei and Wong Choon Hann, will face Indonesian players in the first round of the Super Series Indonesian Open on Wednesday.

World number one player Chong Wei will meet Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka, while Choon Hann will play against Yunus Alamsyah.

Malaysian doubles Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong will meet Indonesia's Luluk Hadiyanto-Candra Wijaya.

National doubles coach Rexy Mainaky said he was confident his players would not have problems to go into the quarter-finals where he expected them to meet Korean pair Ko Sung Hyun-Yoo Yeon Seong.

However, he is not having high hopes as his players are still recovering from a less satisfactory performance in the Thomas Cup last month.

Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka said he was better prepared to face the world's number one player now, having forced Chong Wei to play three sets before losing the game in the Singapore Open.

"I am more confident to meet him (Lee Chong Wei) now as I have fought him before," he added.

Yunus Alamsyah, who will face Choon Hann, is also optimistic of defeating the Malaysian player easily.

Earlier, in the qualifying rounds on Tuesday, two Malaysian players, Beryno Wong Jiann Tze and Wee Chung Pei, failed to make it to the next round after they lost to players from India.

Ex-coach's jail sentence cut to a year

PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal yesterday sentenced former athletics coach C. Ramanathan to 12 months' jail for molesting two junior athletes 19 years ago. A three-man bench led by Datuk Mohd Hishamudin Mohd Yunus unanimously dismissed Ramanathan's appeal against conviction, but varied the jail sentence of four years to a year, which was to run concurrently. Following yesterday's ruling, Ramanathan, 75, a former teacher, walked out a free man as he had served 10 months in Kajang Prison. Convicts get one-third remission for good behaviour while in prison. However, he will lose his pension. Hishamudin, who sat with Datuk Abdul Wahab Patail and Datuk Linton Albert, said the court found no merit to overturn the conviction. "However, in reducing the sentence, we considered Ramanathan's age and the long years the appeal has taken." Deputy public prosecutor Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud submitted that then High Court judge Tan Sri Abdull Hamid E...
