KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 12 teams will compete in the national indoor men’s hockey championship, beginning tomorrow in Ipoh.
And the teams have been reminded not to include national players or those from the Project 2013 squad in their ranks.
The Malaysian Hockey Federaton (MHF) secretary, Hashim Mohamed Hashim, said yesterday that they wanted to see other players involved in the indoor scene and for former internationals to take up the game again.
“This national tournament is also a selection ground for a national indoor team to play in the Asian championship in Ipoh (from July 6-11). So we want states to bring in new talent and not to depend on the same players they select for other national tournaments,” he said.
In the two previous Asian championship, Malaysia were represented by club side Sapura. The Asian tournament this year is also a qualifying event for the World Indoors, which will be held in Poland next year.
The format of national competition is a two-group preliminaries with the top sides advancing to the semi-finals.
In Group A are the Armed Forces, Kuala Lumpur, Malacca, Penang, Perak and Selangor. Group B comprises Kedah, Kelantan, Negri Sembilan, Pahang, Perlis and Police.
