KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 (Bernama) -- National back up athletes competing at the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Singapore next month, have vowed to do their best for the country.
Women's singles shuttler Sonia Cheah, 17, said she hoped to bring back a medal for the country.
"I am competing in this event for the first time. I'll do my best to bring home a medal," she told Bernama after attending the YOG news conference at National Sports Council in Bukit Jalil here Wednesday.
Cheah said she was also looking forward to the cultural and educational programmes during the YOG.
"I think it's a good opportunity to learn something new because there will be many interesting elements during the games," she added.
This year, Cheah participated in several tournaments, including the Uber Cup and the Malaysian Grand Prix Gold.
In the recent Asean Schools Games (ASG) here, she won gold medals in the individual and team events.
High jumper Navin Raaj said he was very happy and proud to represent Malaysia at the inaugural Youth Olympics.
Pole vaulter Mohd Fahme Zamzam said he hoped to surpass his own personal record of 4.6m at the games.
"I am not focusing on what medal I could get but more of honing my skills and aiming to break the national record," said the Labuan lad who clinched a bronze medal in the Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Melaka in June.
Malaysia is sending a contingent of 22 athletes and coaches to the games.
