Indonesia To Stage SEA Games In Jakarta And Palembang Not Four Provinces

KUALA LUMPUR, July 27 (Bernama) -- Indonesia, the host for next year's SEA Games, will hold the biennial games in Jakarta and Palembang instead of four provinces as previously announced.

Indonesia had earlier announced that the Games from Nov 11-25 next year would be hosted at four provinces -- Jakarta, Bandung, Palembang and Semarang.

The Indonesian SEA Games Organizing Committee (Inasoc) sports and venues deputy, Djoko Pramono said the decision to hold the SEA Games in Jakarta and Palembang was made by Indonesian president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono last week.

"These are instructions from above, so Inosoc has to make everything possible," he said in the online-edition of Jakarta Post.

Djoko said the move to hold the games in Jakarta and Palembang had forced Inosoc to reorganise its logistics and infrastructure plan.

"The two provinces will each host 21 sports," said Djoko adding that the details of the allocation would be disclosed later.

He said with only 16 months to go, Inosoc would have to work round-the-clock to ensure that all venues would be ready on time.

Swimming which was initially planned in Bandung, will have to move to Jakarta while Palembang will hold water polo, fin swimming and diving.

Football matches which were earlier planned to be held in Jakarta and Palembang, might be held in just one province as suggested by the Indonesian Soccer Union (PSSI), to reduce cost and better coordination.

Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) honorary secretary, Datuk Sieh Kok Chi when contacted said it was up to the host to decide on the venues.

"It's up to their convenience. If they want to hold in four or two provinces, it is their choice. In fact the 2003 SEA Games in Vietnam was held in two provinces, Ho Chi Minh city and Hanoi and the Vietnamese handled it well.

"So did the 2005 edition in the Philippines where the venues were on different islands. Its up to the organizer to plan and organize it according to their budget," he said.

Rajagobal was let off the hook by the Football Association of Malaysia's (FAM) Disciplinary Committee after finding no evidence that he had violated FAM's Article 88, as claimed. "After listening to the recording of the post-match press conference, we decided to drop the charge against Rajagopal as he did not make such a statement. "Maybe his (Rajagobal) assessment and comments of the match was misconstrued by the media. There was no mention of the FAM policy throughout his comments," said Taufik after emerging from a three-hour Disciplinary Committee meeting at Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya, here, Wednesday. Rajagobal who does not mince his words when asked to com...
