PUTRAJAYA, Sept 20 (Bernama) -- The Youth and Sports Ministry on Monday gave an assurance that it would take measures to ensure the security of the Malaysian contingent at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi early next month.
Its minister, Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the ministry would place security as its main agenda to avoid any undesired incidents for the athletes during the games.
"We believe the Indian government is capable of providing appropriate security measures to prevent any threat from militant groups," he told reporters after the handing over of the Jalur Gemilang to the Malaysian chef de mission to the Commonwealth Games, Tan Sri Abdul Halil Abdul Mutalib, here.
Ahmad Shabery said the ministry would get in touch with the Malaysian High Commission in New Delhi to monitor the latest developments there.
He said this when asked to comment on the incident where two Taiwanese tourists were injured after being shot at by two men near the main mosque in New Delhi on Sunday.
He said the ministry would also collaborate with other Commonwealth countries so that issues on security and health during the games in New Delhi could be tackled seriously.
"I will bring up the matter for discussion at the cabinet level and will find experts in the country to advise the Malaysian contingent who will be competing there," he said.
Ahmad Shabery said he would accompany the national contingent throughout the games there.
Malaysia is sending 201 athletes and 95 officials to the games from Oct 3 to 14. The Malaysian athletes will be competing in 17 types of sports.
