Nicol, Wee Wern Advances To Quarter-finals

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 20 (Bernama) -- Malaysian top women squash players Datuk Nicol Ann David and Low Wee Wern advanced to the quarter-finals of the Women's World Open squash championship after defeating their respective opponents at the Soho Square Squash Centre in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, Sunday.

The world number one, Nicol took 30 minutes to defeat Eyptian Raneem El Weleily with an identical scores of 11-7, 11-7 and 11-7.

"I was trying to keep composed. I know that with being in Egypt and playing Raneem I expect her to come up with everything. And also there was the home crowd, so I was trying to make sure my focus was right.

"Raneem has really developed her game a lot, and that her shots can work really well. I knew she was going for it and I had to keep a look out and not let her do that," said Nicol as quouted in the tournament official website, www.sohosquareworldopen.com.

Nicol will be playing against her compatriot, Wee Wern, who reached the last eight for the first time.

In an earlier match, Malaysia's number two, Wee Wern continued her winning way after defeating Isabelle Stoehr of France on 8-11, 11-7, 11-5 and 11-8 in 55 minutes.

"Tough work, it was pretty close. In the first she (Stoehr) was in great form and I just had to hang in with her. She was high on confidence after a good win yesterday.

"The second was evenly matched, she made a few errors from 6-all so I was a bit lucky to win that, but I managed to get leads in the third and fourth which was important as she came back strongly towards the end.

"It's great to be in the quarters for the first time," said Wee Wern.

On Saturday, Wee Wern marched to the second round of the Women's World Open after sending off four-time World Open finalist and seventh seed Natalie Grinham of the Netherlands.

A three-man bench led by Datuk Mohd Hishamudin Mohd Yunus unanimously dismissed Ramanathan's appeal against conviction, but varied the jail sentence of four years to a year, which was to run concurrently. Following yesterday's ruling, Ramanathan, 75, a former teacher, walked out a free man as he had served 10 months in Kajang Prison. Convicts get one-third remission for good behaviour while in prison. However, he will lose his pension. Hishamudin, who sat with Datuk Abdul Wahab Patail and Datuk Linton Albert, said the court found no merit to overturn the conviction. "However, in reducing the sentence, we considered Ramanathan's age and the long years the appeal has taken." Deputy public prosecutor Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud submitted that then High Court judge Tan Sri Abdull Hamid E...
