KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 22 (Bernama) -- Asian Track and Field (ATF) Championships gold medallist Lee Hup Wei hopes to add the Asian Games gold medal to his trophy cabinet.
The Dengkil, Selangor-born high jumper who holds the national high jump record of 2.27m, is also eager to make up for a costly mistake that denied him a medal at the New Delhi Commonwealth Games which ended last week.
Hup Wei who clinched the gold medal at the ATF in Amman, Jordan back in 2007, remains confident of coming back with a medal from the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China scheduled from Nov 13-27.
"In Delhi, I was too anxious to win a medal and that resulted in an injury to my ankle but luckily it was not serious," Hup Wei who finished seventh in the Doha Asian Games four years ago told Bernama here Thursday.
In New Delhi, Lee could only manage 2.23m, way below his personal best of 2.27m, achieved at the China Open in May 2008 at Beijing's National Stadium, also known as the Bird's Nest, to break the 13-year-old record of 2.24m set by Loo Kum Zee in the 1995 Chiang Mai SEA Games.
He added that since he has a good track record in China, he was confident of winning a medal.
Coached by Jorge Luis Alfaro Quinones, Hup Wei, has won gold medals at two consecutive SEA Games, namely in Korat, Thailand (2007) and Vientiane, Laos (2009).
"I have always performed well in China and that has given me added confidence to perform well in Guangzhou," he said.
