THE battle to finish as the AFF Suzuki Cup top scorer will go down to the wire as Safee Sali and Cristian Gonzales attempt to put one over the other today. Safee doubled his tally to four goals with a brace in Malaysia's 3-0 win in the final first leg on Sunday as Gonzales failed to register a shot on target the whole game.
The Uruguayan-born forward scored both goals in Indonesia's 2-0 aggregate semi-final win against Philippines but cut a forlorn figure in Bukit Jalil where Safee took centre stage.
"It is not important for me to finish as the top scorer because my only concern is the team. Personally, I don't target individual honours, my focus is on helping the team win," said the Selangor striker.
Safee, 26, has had a renaissance since his recall to the national team by coach K. Rajagobal and is clearly enjoying playing alongside the youthful national players.
It has earned him the attention of Indonesian clubs which Safee found flattering.
"I hope my performances have attracted the attention of others and I would consider playing abroad if given the chance. It's a challenge I'm willing to take on," added Safee, who previously played for Kuala Lumpur and Sarawak.
