Badminton: BAM says yes to Rexy

THE BA of Malaysia (BAM) has approved Rexy Mainaky's request for Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong to have joint-training sessions with back-up pairs in order to help the senior combination improve their defence.
Rexy and back-up coach Tan Kim Her have agreed on twice a week sessions besides matchplay on Wednesday and Saturday.

The first session was held yesterday where Boon Heong had a one-hour session with Mak Hee Chun-Tan Wee Kiong and Goh Wei Shem-Lim Khim Wah.

Kim Her said it will be a long term arrangement as both groups of players will benefit from the training.
"The arrangement was to help Kien Keat and Boon Heong improve their defence while the back-up pairs will also improve by training with the top pair. It is a long term plan as it is going to help all the pairs in their preparation for the 2012 Olympics."

"Boon Heong had a one-hour session with Hee Chun-Wee Kiong and Wei Shem-Khim Wah who did the attacking. Kien Keat wasn't around but he will join the next session.

"I will not involve the younger back-up combinations as Kien Keat-Boon Heong will not benefit much from the training. Rexy and I have to constantly discuss so that the training sessions are fruitful and there is progress."

The joint-training is one of the ways Rexy feels Kien Keat-Boon Heong can rectify some of their weaknesses as Hee Chun-Wee Kiong and Wei Shem-Khim Wah are quite effective in their attacks.

The back-up pairs have also been struggling of late and getting quality training time with Kien Keat-Boon Heong is also expected to help them develop their overall performance.

Ex-coach's jail sentence cut to a year

PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal yesterday sentenced former athletics coach C. Ramanathan to 12 months' jail for molesting two junior athletes 19 years ago. A three-man bench led by Datuk Mohd Hishamudin Mohd Yunus unanimously dismissed Ramanathan's appeal against conviction, but varied the jail sentence of four years to a year, which was to run concurrently. Following yesterday's ruling, Ramanathan, 75, a former teacher, walked out a free man as he had served 10 months in Kajang Prison. Convicts get one-third remission for good behaviour while in prison. However, he will lose his pension. Hishamudin, who sat with Datuk Abdul Wahab Patail and Datuk Linton Albert, said the court found no merit to overturn the conviction. "However, in reducing the sentence, we considered Ramanathan's age and the long years the appeal has taken." Deputy public prosecutor Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud submitted that then High Court judge Tan Sri Abdull Hamid E...

The Indonesia SEA Games Organizing Committee (Inasoc), was qouted by Jakarta Post as saying that a pair of Komodo dragons, a male (Modo) and a female (Modi), were chosen in recognition of the Republic's conservation efforts to protect the dwindling number of the rare lizard. Modo and Modi were unveiled last night at a function in Jakarta, to mark the 200-day countdown before the games open on Nov 11 in Palembang. The Komodo dragons, the largest lizard in the world, only live on the Indonesian islands of Komodo in Flores, East Nusa Tenggara. On Jan 15, Inasoc unveiled its logo, a Garuda eagle, to symbolize the power and grandeur of Indonesia.
