PETALING JAYA, Feb 26 (Bernama) -- Adrian Ang came close to clinching Malaysia's third gold medal but fumbled at the last hurdle.

The 24-year-old Penangite had to settle for the silver in the Men's Masters of the 5th Commonwealth Tenpin Bowling Championship at Sunway Mega Lanes in Bandar Sunway here Saturday.

In the finals step-ladder event, Ang managed to knock down 161 pin falls, 45 pins behind Remy Ong of Singapore who scored 206 pin falls.

"I wanted to make a good start at the first few frames and managed to have two strikes on the first two frames. I think I might have inadvertently in a bit of rush in doing so," said Ang.

At the outset, Ang continued his fine running in the second block of the Masters event, accumulating 1,295 pin falls to follow-up yesterday's 1,353 pins or a total of 2,648 pin falls, thus booking his berth in the step-ladder finals.

The top three finishers in the men's and women's categories qualified for the step-ladder finals.

"After Remy managed to make adjustment to his game, I tried to calm down but it was too late. So, I just try my best by making sure that the ball went into the pocket every time.

"I've been playing in the step-ladder for quite sometime but this time around, I admitted that I did not managed to do well," he added.

His next assignment was to compete in the selection roll-off for the Brunswick Euro Challenge in France Paris and the National Championship next month.

Meanwhile, Ong earlier defeated Matt Chamberlain of England, 197-161 to enter the finals.

"This was anybody's game as we just had to bowl one game. He (Adrian Ang) had a few unlucky breaks and I got lucky, So, at this level (step-ladder), just one game anything goes. Definitely, I am satisfied with the win. This is my first Masters gold medal in the Commonwealth championship," said Ong.

In the women's category, England's Hailey White defeated Shayna Ng of Singapore 217-192 in the finals to claim the third gold medal for England.

Her compatriot, Nicki Ainge had to content with the bronze after she was defeated by Shayna 191-264 in the first step-ladder match.

Singapore topped the medal tally with three gold and two silver medals while England finished second with three gold, one silver and two bronze medals.

Malaysia finished third with a haul of two gold, three silver and three bronze medals.

Malaysian junior athletes are just too ‘lembik’

Saya setuju. We are working on more coaches! “ @ManOlimpik : Malaysian junior athletes are just too ‘lembik’ http://t.co/7D7wmHWaNy ” — Khairy Jamaluddin (@Khairykj) June 10, 2014 The benchmark. Can our junior athletes train as hard as Malaysia's world No.1 badminton player, Lee Chong Wei? “IT IS okay lah. The training is not too bad lah. I will try lah … Wah, so hard lah today.” These are some of the common statements I hear from our juniors nowadays. It is not only in badminton. It is the easy-going, laid-back attitude and lack of competitiveness at grassroots level that we have problems producing quality players. I have travelled quite a bit. After ending my decade-long career with the national team, I went to play in the league in Europe. It’s different there. The European athletes know what they want. And they do it with real focus. Even the young ones possess admirable self-control and show a high level of commitment. During my time in the ...

Organising Major Sports Events Can Inspire Sports Culture Among The People - Khairy

PUTRAJAYA, June 5 (Bernama) -- Organising major sports events can help inspire sports culture among the people and ensure a healthy lifestyle said Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin. Khairy said the Tour of Malaysia cycling race organised since 1963, for example, can encourage more people to take the sport in a more competitive way or just for recreation purposes. "A study carried out by a world renown medical journal, The Lancet, revealed that 61 percent of adults in Malaysia do not engage themselves in active sports. "A study by the Health Ministry revealed that only 25 percent of Malaysians exercise," he said in his speech when launching the 2013 Tour of Malaysia (Jelajah Malaysia) at the Youth and Sports Ministry, here, Wednesday. "Cycling, though not as popular here as in countries like Denmark, the activity is becoming popular among the people as can be seen through an increase in sale of bicycles for recreation," he sa...
