Head Start For Malaysian Shuttlers In India

NEW DELHI, April 27 (Bernama) -- Malaysian shuttlers, along with the world's top player Datuk Lee Chong Wei, had a head start in the Indian Open Super Series Wednesday -- easily advancing to the second round.

As expected, Lee, favourite to win his maiden Indian Open title, set the pace by beating his Indian opponent Ajay Jayaram.

On the second day, other Malaysians also took advantage of the less competitive championship, where world class players like China men's singles stars Lin Dan and Chen Long plus women single's aces - Wang Shixian, Wang Yihan and Wang Xin - were missing.

However, their talents are yet to be tested in Delhi, as the early rounds posed little challenge from young players, largely from India, Japan and South Korea.

National top players like women's double's pair Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty who had an easy game against India's Thulasi P.C-Siki Reddy, winning 21-7, 21-11, are likely to rough it out in the next round.

They are drawn against India's top pair Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa, the 2010 Commonwealth Games gold medal winners, on Thursday.

Likewise men's double team Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Thien How Hoon would face third seeded Indonesia pair Chandra Alvent Yulianto and Gunawan Hendra Aprida.

In Wednesday's matches, men's doubles pair Mohd Zakry-How Hoon knocked out Utsav Mishra-Ravinder Singh 21-9, 21-17 while Chan Peng Soo-Tan Wee Kiong outplayed Sajeeth S.- Jagadish Yadav 21-7, 21-17.

The women's pair of Chong Sook Chin-Goh Liu Ying beat Sanyogita Ghorpade-Sail Rane 21-19, 21-13, 21-12 while mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying defeated India's Tarun Kona-Ashwini Ponnapa 23-21, 21-10.

In other matches involving top players, Indonesia's Tuafik Hidayat, seeded second in Delhi, outplayed India's Anup Sridhar 21-13, 21-5 while Danish veteran Peter Hoeg Gade, the wiorld number six, had to slog it out in three sets to tame Japan's Kazushi Yamada 13-21, 22-20, 21-8.

The US$200,000 (RM600,000) Indian Open which was promoted to the Super Series status started at the Sri Fort sports Complex in Delhi today.

Malaysian junior athletes are just too ‘lembik’

Saya setuju. We are working on more coaches! “ @ManOlimpik : Malaysian junior athletes are just too ‘lembik’ http://t.co/7D7wmHWaNy ” — Khairy Jamaluddin (@Khairykj) June 10, 2014 The benchmark. Can our junior athletes train as hard as Malaysia's world No.1 badminton player, Lee Chong Wei? “IT IS okay lah. The training is not too bad lah. I will try lah … Wah, so hard lah today.” These are some of the common statements I hear from our juniors nowadays. It is not only in badminton. It is the easy-going, laid-back attitude and lack of competitiveness at grassroots level that we have problems producing quality players. I have travelled quite a bit. After ending my decade-long career with the national team, I went to play in the league in Europe. It’s different there. The European athletes know what they want. And they do it with real focus. Even the young ones possess admirable self-control and show a high level of commitment. During my time in the ...

Organising Major Sports Events Can Inspire Sports Culture Among The People - Khairy

PUTRAJAYA, June 5 (Bernama) -- Organising major sports events can help inspire sports culture among the people and ensure a healthy lifestyle said Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin. Khairy said the Tour of Malaysia cycling race organised since 1963, for example, can encourage more people to take the sport in a more competitive way or just for recreation purposes. "A study carried out by a world renown medical journal, The Lancet, revealed that 61 percent of adults in Malaysia do not engage themselves in active sports. "A study by the Health Ministry revealed that only 25 percent of Malaysians exercise," he said in his speech when launching the 2013 Tour of Malaysia (Jelajah Malaysia) at the Youth and Sports Ministry, here, Wednesday. "Cycling, though not as popular here as in countries like Denmark, the activity is becoming popular among the people as can be seen through an increase in sale of bicycles for recreation," he sa...
