KUALA LUMPUR, June 21 (Bernama) -- Thirty-two teams from 25 countries will compete in the first International Sepak Takraw Federation (ISTAF) World Championship to be held at the Titiwangsa Stadium, here, from July 21 to 24.
Sepak Takraw Association of Malaysia (PSM) president Datuk Ahmad Ismail said the aim of organising the championship was to make sepak takraw an international sport and not only known as a "village sport".
"This championship and other super series will determine the participating countries' world rankings in the sport," he said after chairing a meeting of the ISTAF World Championship main organising committee, here, Monday.
He said among the 25 participating countries were Australia, China, Taiwan, Germany, Iran, India, Indonesia, the United States, Oman, France, South Korea, Thailand and Laos.
Ahmad said the championship would be broadcast to 66 countries with about 750 people watching the live and delayed telecasts.
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin will declare open the championship at the Titiwangsa Stadium on July 20.
ISTAF secretary-general Abdul Halim Kader said to develop sepak takraw into a global sport, sepak takraw associations must be able to bring about change and accept criticisms.
