JAKARTA, June 25 (Bernama)-- Datuk Lee Chong Wei looks unstoppable in his march towards his third consecutive Indonesian Open men's singles title.
He plays Peter Gade of Denmark in the final tomorrow after overcoming his stiffest resistance todate in the US$600,000 championship at the Istora Senayan with a victory over rising Chinese star Chen Long in their semi-final clash.
It took Chong Wei, the defending champion, almost 53 minutes to subdue the young Chinese from Fujian Province in scores of 21-17,21-18 to book his ticket into the final where the Danish veteran Peter Gade awaits.
The 34-year-old Gade beat the all conquering Japanese player Sho Sasaki in the other semi-final 21-11,21-14 and many see the match tomorrow as a clash between a player at his prime and a player past his prime.
"But whatever it is, Peter (Gade) is an experienced player who knows his way around the court. Even at his age he is still a top four player in the world today," said Chong Wei.
The last time Gade met Chong Wei was in the final of the Indian Open in New Delhi in April where the Malaysian triumphed in three games, but according to the Malaysian, Gade was in good form now and that his experience would help him.
Chong Wei is on the verge of a third consecutive title and if he wins tomorrow, he will go into the history book of the Indonesian Open as the first non-Indonesian to have won the men's singles title three times in a row.
And India's Saina Nehwal is about to take the same footsteps too.
She is in the final of the women's singles after a sweet victory over Taiwan's Cheng Siao Chieh 21-14,17-21, 21-14 to for a showdown against China's Wang Yihan tomorrow.
Having won the previous two editions, the Hyderabad-based Saina is going for her third consecutive title in her bid to earn her rightful place in the record books.
"I love playing any of the Chinese players. They bring out the best in me.
But my victory over Siao Chieh today is also satisfying. She beat me in the second round of the Singapore Open last week and now I have avenged my defeat," added Saina.
The men's doubles competition will see an all-China final with former world championS Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng, the No 3 seeds, taking on Chai Biao and Guo Zhengdong, seeded No 8 while the women's final will see Indonesia's Vita Marissa and Nadya Melati play the world's No 1 pair, Yu Yang and Wang Xiaoli of China.
