Volleyball League Revived After 13 Years

KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Amateur Volleyball Association (MAVA) league has been revived after 13 years, as part of the association's efforts to promote the sports to smaller towns in the country.

The MAVA League, spotting a new name - 1Malaysia Volleyball League - will feature a men's and women's league, unlike in the past where there was only a men's league.

MAVA vice president Azahari Sairin said the league was made possible through an injection of funds and support from Mizuno and Mikasa, two closely associated sponsors, of the association for many years.

"The focus on the league will be grassroots development and venues selected include small towns like Mentakab and Batu Pahat.

"By organising the league in smaller towns, we hope to promote the sport to the grassroots where quality tournaments are lacking," he told reporters at the launch of the event at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil here today.

Azahari said the league which was first introduced in 1993 but stopped in 1998 due to the global financial crisis, would also be used as a platform to identify players for the 2011 SEA Games in Indonesia.

He said this year eight men's teams and five women's teams would take part in the league that would be held on a 'round-robin' format with the first event held at Sekolah Tinggi Jenis Kebangsaan Cina Jalan Labuh, Batu Pahat, Johor on July 9-10, followed by Kolej Han Chiang Indoor Stadium, Penang (July 16-17), Dewan Majlis Bandaran Mentakab, Pahang (July 23-24) and Cheras Badminton Stadium, Cheras, Kuala Lumpur (July 29-31).

The men's teams comprise Bukit Jalil Sports School (SSBJ), Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sports School, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Kelab Sukan Segamat, Perlis, Armed Forces (ATM), Majlis Bandaraya Shah Alam and Sibu while the women's league will see SSBJ, E-Globex Sdn Bhd, PDT Pahang, Sibu and ATM taking part.

Ex-coach's jail sentence cut to a year

PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal yesterday sentenced former athletics coach C. Ramanathan to 12 months' jail for molesting two junior athletes 19 years ago. A three-man bench led by Datuk Mohd Hishamudin Mohd Yunus unanimously dismissed Ramanathan's appeal against conviction, but varied the jail sentence of four years to a year, which was to run concurrently. Following yesterday's ruling, Ramanathan, 75, a former teacher, walked out a free man as he had served 10 months in Kajang Prison. Convicts get one-third remission for good behaviour while in prison. However, he will lose his pension. Hishamudin, who sat with Datuk Abdul Wahab Patail and Datuk Linton Albert, said the court found no merit to overturn the conviction. "However, in reducing the sentence, we considered Ramanathan's age and the long years the appeal has taken." Deputy public prosecutor Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud submitted that then High Court judge Tan Sri Abdull Hamid E...

The Indonesia SEA Games Organizing Committee (Inasoc), was qouted by Jakarta Post as saying that a pair of Komodo dragons, a male (Modo) and a female (Modi), were chosen in recognition of the Republic's conservation efforts to protect the dwindling number of the rare lizard. The Komodo dragons, the largest lizard in the world, only live on the Indonesian islands of Komodo in Flores, East Nusa Tenggara. On Jan 15, Inasoc unveiled its logo, a Garuda eagle, to symbolize the power and grandeur of Indonesia.
