Football: Malaysia Lost 3-5 To Singapore

SINGAPORE, July 23 (Bernama) -- A tougher challenge awaits Malaysia on their return leg in Bukit Jalil next week after losing 3-5 to Singapore in their first leg Asian Zone World Cup Qualifier match at the Jalan Besar Stadium, here Saturday night.

The match ended quite unlike the way it started, with Malaysia scoring the first goal barely 24 seconds after the opening whistle through Mohd Safee Mohd Sali.

The early goal, however, did little to unsettle Singapore, dubbed the Lions, whose relentless attack earned them a freekick just outside the box in the seventh minute.

Aleksandar Duric converted the free kick to level the score 1-1.

The Malaysians, dubbed the Malayan Tigers, found themselves having to defend against a spirited Singapore, whose striker Shi Jiayi was wreaking havoc in front of Malaysia's goalmouth.

Singapore earned another goal in the 21st minute with Qiu Li converting a freekick outside the box following a foul on teammate Sharil Ishak.

Mustafic Fahrudin scored the third goal in the 43rd minute while another by Shi Jiayi in the 45th minute put the score at 4-1.

In the second half, the Malaysians, who were reduced to 10 men after their captain Shafiq Rahim was shown the red card in the 50th minute, stepped up the pressure and soon found themselves closing the gap through Abdul Hadi Yahaya and Safee Sali who scored a goal each in the 68th and 69th minutes.

Duric, however, widened the gap to 5-3 in the 80th minute, throwing the race for the qualifier wide open when both teams meet for their second leg match in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur.

MALAYSIA: Mohd Sharbinee Allawee, Mahalli Jasuli, Mohd Asraruddin Omar, Mohamad Muslim Ahmad, Mohd Fadhli Mohd Shas, Shariq Rahim, Ismail Faruqi Ashari (Mohd Amirulhadi Zainal), Mohd Safee Sali (Izaq Faris Ramlan), Amar Rohidan, Ahmad Fakri Saarani (Abdul Hadi Yahaya), Kunanlan Subramaniam.

SINGAPORE: Mohamad Izwan Mahbud, Muhamad Safuwan Baharudin, Shi Jiayi, Alexsandar Duric, Qiu Li (Fazrul Nawaz Shahul Hameed), Hariss Harun, Mustafic Fahrudin, Daniel Bennet, Shahril Ishak (Shahdan Sulaiman), Ismail Yunos, Juma'at Jantan (Shaiful).

Rajagobal Let Off The Hook

PETALING JAYA, April 24 (Bernama) -- National head coach Datuk K. Rajagobal was let off the hook by the Football Association of Malaysia's (FAM) Disciplinary Committee after finding no evidence that he had violated FAM's Article 88, as claimed. FAM Disciplinary Committee chairman Datuk Taufik Abdul Razak said the committee had decided not to charge Rajagobal after carefully analysing the video of the post-match press conference by the 56-year-old coach. "After listening to the recording of the post-match press conference, we decided to drop the charge against Rajagopal as he did not make such a statement. "Maybe his (Rajagobal) assessment and comments of the match was misconstrued by the media. There was no mention of the FAM policy throughout his comments," said Taufik after emerging from a three-hour Disciplinary Committee meeting at Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya, here, Wednesday. Rajagobal who does not mince his words when asked to com...

Ex-coach's jail sentence cut to a year

PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal yesterday sentenced former athletics coach C. Ramanathan to 12 months' jail for molesting two junior athletes 19 years ago. A three-man bench led by Datuk Mohd Hishamudin Mohd Yunus unanimously dismissed Ramanathan's appeal against conviction, but varied the jail sentence of four years to a year, which was to run concurrently. Following yesterday's ruling, Ramanathan, 75, a former teacher, walked out a free man as he had served 10 months in Kajang Prison. Convicts get one-third remission for good behaviour while in prison. However, he will lose his pension. Hishamudin, who sat with Datuk Abdul Wahab Patail and Datuk Linton Albert, said the court found no merit to overturn the conviction. "However, in reducing the sentence, we considered Ramanathan's age and the long years the appeal has taken." Deputy public prosecutor Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud submitted that then High Court judge Tan Sri Abdull Hamid E...
