KUALA LUMPUR, July 24 (Bernama) -- Malaysia failed to overcome archrivals Thailand in the final of the International Sepak Takraw Federation's inaugural World Cup at the Stadium Titiwangsa here Sunday.
In the first set, Malaysia's trio of Noor Azman Abdul Hamid, Norshahruddin Mad Ghani and Farhan Adam lost 4-15 in just 11 minutes.
Malaysia's coach Jamaluddin Hassan substituted captain Noor Azman with Muhamad Syazam Husin in the second set but the Malaysians did not fare much better, losing 6-15 in 14 minutes.
The national players put up a better fight against the Thai trio of Pornchai Kaokaew, Siriwat Sakha and Pattarapong Yupadee in the third set but still lost 11-15.
Speaking to reporters afterwards, Jamaluddin said Malaysia's team was still young and expected the players to produce a better showing at the SEA Games in Indonesia at the end of the year.
Thailand also won the women's final, defeating Vietnam 3-0 in straight sets of 15-7, 15-12 and 15-9.
