Daren leads the way in Vietnam Open

PETALING JAYA: National elite shuttler Liew Daren led the way in the opening ground of the Vietnam Open at Ho Chi Minh City yesterday.

The 11th seeded Daren who will most likely lead Malaysias challenge in the Jakarta SEA Games in November easily brushed aside Singapore’s Prasojo Adi Andrianus 21-14, 21-15.

The 24-year-old Daren will face Indonesian youngster Arif Ramadhan next for a place in the third round.
Another shuttler from the elite squad, Chan Kwong Beng, who had an extended stay in London during the world championships also progressed to the second round by beating compatriot Soo Teck Zhi 21-14, 21-19.

Kwong Beng will next face 14th seed Keigo Sonoda of Japan who defeated Lim Fang Yang and he will be joined by Goh Soon Huat and Misbun Ramdan Misbun as well as former international Kuan Beng Hong.
However, it was the end of the road, for Iskandar Zulkarnian Zainuddin and Saw Weng Jun.

In the men’s doubles, national junior champions Jagdish Singh-Low Juan Shen made it to the main draw after a hard fought 21-16, 20-22, 21-12 victory over Singapore’s Ngo Yi Chye-Gerald Ong in the second qualifying round.

The duo had earlier swept past local pair Quang Tuan Bui-Ha Ahn Le 21-12, 21-10 in the first qualifying round.

Jagdish-Juan Shen will face Manu Attri-Jishnu Sanyal of India in the first round today.
Also in action today are fourth seeds Gan Teik Chai-Tan Bin Shin, sixth seeds Goh Wei Shem-Lim Khim Wah, seventh seeds Ong Soon Hock-Mak Hee Chun, Mohd Lufti Zaim-Vountus Indra Mawan and Ow Yao Han-Tan Wee Kiong.

Indonesia Choose Komodo Dragon As SEA Games Mascot

KUALA LUMPUR, April 26 (Bernama) -- Host for the 26th SEA Games, Indonesia has chosen the Komodo dragon as mascot for the 2011 Games which will be held in Jakarta and Palembang from Nov 11 to 25. The Indonesia SEA Games Organizing Committee (Inasoc), was qouted by Jakarta Post as saying that a pair of Komodo dragons, a male (Modo) and a female (Modi), were chosen in recognition of the Republic's conservation efforts to protect the dwindling number of the rare lizard. Modo and Modi were unveiled last night at a function in Jakarta, to mark the 200-day countdown before the games open on Nov 11 in Palembang. The Komodo dragons, the largest lizard in the world, only live on the Indonesian islands of Komodo in Flores, East Nusa Tenggara.
