KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Amateur Athletic Union (MAAU) will soon revive the ‘Kids Athletics’ programme to identify talented and potential young kids and ensure a bigger pool of athletes.
MAAU coaching director Mohd Musa Noor Mohd said the Kids Athletics programme was a programme under the elite sports development programme for grassroots, introduced by the International Athletics Associations Federation (IAAF) here in the year 2000 but stopped in 2005.
“When introduced, the concept was similar to the ‘One Student One Sport’ programme introduced by the Education Ministry. Unfortunately, a number of problems involving the implementation resulted in the programme being stopped in 2005,” said Mohd Musa. He added that the Kids Athletics programme was aimed at identifying potential kids aged between 7 to 12, and teaching them the basic technique in athletics events like sprinting, running, jumping and throwing.
Mohd Musa said the programme would help MAAU produce a larger pool of talented athletes to ensure there would not be a short supply of capable athletes to fill the places of aging or retiring athletes. — Bernama
